well, we played our last real 'gig' saturday night. i decided i'd either go out in a blaze of glory or not. turned it up, played loud, made very few mistakes and feel really good about my part of our performance. our whole band actually was really good, which is a good way to end it all. we only have one obligation left which is an outdoor 'day at the docks' festival, blessing of the fishing fleet, etc. since our singer double booked herself we're going to do some new tunes with a different singer until she shows up. i want to make this something people will be talking about and in a good way.

and now looking back on this past year playing with my band mates i think the main cause of all my fears is that i got intimidated by our other 2 guitar players. they both know all the stevie raye/jimi riffs and play them loud with lots of effects and all my parts were played relatively clean. when not playing rhythm, i played fills and lots of little parts that kind of run through entire tunes. it's hard being the only passive member in a band. one tends to be the one that always gets thrown under the bus. and so it goes........

I understand how that can be intimidating/naueseating to have to play with aggressive Hendrix wannabe's. As far as passive, naw you were active in generating the overall sound of the group, just not as aggressive as the others. Did you have fun? Did folks dance? Did you learn new things?

"Music is dance, not a competition" - This is my response when anyone tries to impress me with brazillions of notes.

Or, do what Noel's done, and start your own band!

good things......had fun, people danced like crazy and i learned a lot of new stuff and gained some self confidence playing in front of people. the biggest plus for me is the majority of the songs we covered that were the real crowd pleasers, i picked.

when i say passive, i mean my personality as we had four type A's. our bass player was an instigator, our singer a prima donna who was always too tired to practice, two guitar players either consciously or sub-consciously trying to out play each other and our drummer somewhere in the middle (who probably just wanted to get laid Laughing ) every bar and grille we played this summer had their best night ever for drink sales. it's probably good to stop before our flame burned out. now several of the guys want to form an all original nu funk band. thankfully, without me.

sorry to go on for so long.....

now back to surf music Smile

What were the songs you picked that got folks dancing? That should be a clue as to the direction the band should take.

Go back to the bars and tell them you have a new band to book for next season. One that is way better than the one you just played in. I know you don't, but they don't:twisted: and bingo, incentive to form a new surf act. Worst case call in the reserves from down the coast and piedmont players.

crazy little thing called love (queen), i want you to want me, i saw her standing there, twist and shout, you shook me all night long (acdc), lonely boy (black keyes), middle of the road (pretenders), what i like about you, billie jean and a few others i can't recall right off the bat

You did good Carol. Sounds like you learned a lot and had fun. Going from bedroom player to on-stage is a huge & important step that not everyone gets a chance to take.

An old thread, but a goodie.

Never assume a mistake sounds worse than the correct version, especially with the band's originals or any Top 40 covers. There are bound to be people in the audience wishing they'd thought of doing it that way themselves.

Was it Paul Johnson who tells the story (somewhere in SG101) about recording Mr.Moto, and messing up the plain old vanilla Amajor chord in the opening? They liked it so much better than the written way that they kept it in, and now it's part of the Surf Guitar canon.

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.
