Want to retrofit my old Midland mic shell with a newer dynamic mic inside of it. I am stuck on the wiring. It has the two wires coming from the element, and there's an on/off switch. Then I want to wire it to a really short xlr cable so I can attach a longer one for gigs, since the xlr plug won't fit where the old plug was. Does anyone have a diagram for something like this? Basically where would the element's wires connect to the switch, then from there where do I connect to the cable? Where should the cable's ground wire go to, somewhere on the switch? Thanks. It's a 6 pin switch.

First off, if it's an old mic and there are only two wires coming out to a connector, chances are it's an unbalanced high-impedance capsule and won't interface directly to a modern "standard" balanced low-impedance PA/mixer input. To answer your question, more info is required re. the capsule (does the mic originally have a 1/4" phone plug and plug into a guitar-level input? Does its capsule have more than two connections available?), as well as the configuration of the switch (how are the six pins connected?). Some closeup "gut shots" would probably be pretty helpful if you can post some.

The old mic guts are long gone, the mic that I want to put in there is a newer (yet cheap) mic that had xlr jack on it. The old mic had a 4 pin to 1/4". I will check on the switch and see if the capsule has more connections.

AES standard, XLR pin 1 case or ground, pin 2 hot (red), pin 3 return (black).

Where do I attach the ground wire to, somewhere on the metal mic case?

There will be a metal tab that treads the retaining screw, solder a jumper from pin 1 to the tab, it will make the case ground when you screw the xlr in. You may not need it, try with and without.

You want to attach the case of the mic to pin 1 in the connector on the microphone. You do NOT want to connect pin 1 of the cable to the metal tab on the XLR connector.
