Here's another monster surf 45... Gypsy Surfer b/w Wax 'em down by THE AVANTIS. The Avantis were Pat & Lolly Vegas who would later have a huge hit in the 70's as REDBONE with "Come and get your Love".

"Sea-N-Shore"... awesome tune! This 45 and its flipside, "Metalflakes" were written by Jim Masoner of THE LIVELY ONES! Jim managed the band as well.

Very, very kool. I'd love to hear that flipside.

Michigan rockers Tommy James & The Shondells started out as just THE SHONDELLS. The B-Side of their first hit single "Hanky Panky" had this surf number called "THUNDERBOLT". They would later record the classics "Crimson and Clover" "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mony Mony", and "Crystal Blue Persuasion"!

Moon Probe b/w Twilight City by The Vulcanes. This group performed as THE MARKETTS when a touring group was needed live for the infamous session group who scored hits with The Surfer's Stomp, Out of Limits and more.

Interesting to learn about the Joe Saraceno/Marketts connection. I had a look at the liner notes for Rare Surf Volume 5 and learnt that The Vulcanes also provided the musical backing for one of my favorite girl group surf songs, "Surf Bunny Beach" by The Surf Bunnies (see video below). The Vulcanes even briefly appeared in the Frankie Avalon/Bob Hope movie I'll Take Sweden! (Not going to post a clip of that since the song really stinks, haha).

A standing joke between me and my brother is that we also should hire a band to tour for us while we stay at home making hit records!

Yep! The Vulcanes also performed live for Saraceno's other session group, THE ROUTERS! Apparently they also made some live appearances as The Surfaris too!!! The awesome book REAL GONE GASSERS has a great chapter on Saraceno and his Marketts/Routers stuff.

"BIRDWALK" by The Heyburners from 1963 featuring Pre-Fuzz DAVIE ALLAN! This would be re-recorded later as "RIP'S BIKE" for THE HONDELLS.

The de-Fenders were a surf band based out of Lemoore,
California. The group played the surf sounds of the day
and performed through-out the central valley area. "The de-Fenders"
recorded three tracks in 1964: (1) Irritation, (2) More of More, (3)
Pismo Beach Longboard. In 1965 "the de-Fenders would be
singed by a Los Angeles record label (Diplomacy Records)
and their name would be changed to "The Brymers."

I think it's also important to recognize the contribution of "studio groups" in the development of early surf music. Here's a little gem written by sax session ace, Steve "Shutdown" Douglas covered by Dick Dale and many, many others... BANZAI WASHOUT by The Catalinas.

Here's another great "studio group" song written by Lee Hazelwood who wrote for everyone from Duane Eddy to Nancy Sinatra.

THE HEARSE performed by ace session guitarist Al Casey who also recorded Hazelwood's Baja, Movin', El Aguila and Batman also featured on The Astronaut's "Surfin' with" LP.

From 1962 comes the killer 45 Latinia b/w Tor-Chula, an amazing Latin flavored single by The Sentinals from San Luis Obispo. Beautiful guitar work on these songs!

That's interesting, I hadn't heard the Sentinals version of Tor-Chula, only the version done by the Original Surfaris.
