Permalink Fender Quad Reverb / Speaker Question

Thanks everyone. I really think this is the best forum I've ever been to!
Still missed to donate something, but will do asap!
I have a tech guy who will give me the right cables and he will check if the impedance has been changed. Tubeswell wrote on a different post that unexperienced people like me should stay away from testing this Wink
I think I'll get a pair of the Eminence Texas Heat speaker. Really liked the sound samples on their page. The Jensen are also fine, but quite expensive.
/Edit: the 8ohms Jensen are sold out at the UK Dealer Cry

Sooo, a couple of months later and I went a totally different direction. I've put in one JBL D140F. Impedance on this one is 5.7Ohms, so it shouldn't cause any trouble. Check out the looks:

FWIW the speaker impedance is a nominal rating (- the real impedance of a speaker through an output transformer varies with frequency, signal strength etc) and what you've got will be fine.

As for mucking around with high voltage stuff, depends how adventurous you're feeling.

Well, we've checked the impedance of this particular speaker and it only has ~5.7 Ohms. So you also confirm that this is really working out as a long term combination?

The Hicadoolas

The stock quad reverb has 4 x 16R in parallel (which is 4R). Going to 5.7R isn't going to do any harm at all.

Great, thanks for confirming! Btw, it sounds fantastic!

Dude that looks sick! I bet that big old JBL sounds great!

I'm quite happy with my '69 Twin (also 100w) but those Quads look like they mean serious business!

It really sounds great. I wish it would be possible to put a tone ring in it. I recently bought an old tone ring cab (Echolette) off the bay, but it needs restoration. The other JBL D140F will go in it as soon as it's finished. The downside of this combination is the weight. It's a pain to carry and I thought about putting some wheels at the bottom, but then again there are always lots of stairs...
Our other guitar player has a BF Twin in a head and runs it through a selfmade 1x15" tone ring cab. They both are really powerful amps. I mean REALLY powerful Wink There might be some difference between the circuits, but tbh, I think they sound quite equal (loud!). Master volume is always on 10 to keep as much headroom as possible.

Well, we've checked the impedance of this particular speaker and it only has ~5.7 Ohms. So you also confirm that this is really working out as a long term combination?

You probably measured with an ohmmeter. 5.7 is the "DC resistance" which is almost always lower than the "impedance" by about 25%. So this speaker would be called 8 ohms impedance

Funny, I too actually swapped in an JBL D140F today into my -65 Twin Reverb Custom 15". Not tried it out much yet but it shure sounded "killer" with the Bass VI.

As an owner of many JBL D120, 130, & 140 speakers over the years, some F models some not, use caution when powering only one of them with an 85 watt Fender. These speaker will take a licking but some are a bit fragile. I've overheated a few in my day.

For total stage reliability with a 40 watt Fender 1 JBL is cool. With an 85 watt head you really need a pair if you are going to crank the amp.

Keep it Drippy Brothers and Sisters!

@dboomer: thanks for the info, learned something today and will keep it in mind!

@heepeejepp: nice concidence Wink wait 'till you can crank it up a little.

@Hammond101: are you only referring to the F series, or alu dome JBLs in general? I wonder how all the 1x15" Showman speaker could stay alive then? The Quad has 100W IIRC, BUT I never go past 4 on the volume (with the master on 10). Hope the speaker can take this beating in the long run. Maybe it's time to order some Webers. Getting the right baffle for the amp was the hardest part anyway. Thanks for the advice.

+1 Especially with JBL speakers

From the specs, I can't see any reason to worry.
Does'nt the peak power from the 4 ohm amp decrease since the speaker is 8 ohm (and won't my ears starts to bleed before the speaker? Big Grin )
