Have you heard the song I'm talking about?

OK, I found a snippet at Amazon. I'm working on the rest.

You refer to Scratchy, a hit for Travis Wammack, a 16 year old Memphis guitarist, in 1963. He is now famous (but mostly anonymous) for later session work at Muscle Shoals with Aretha Franklin and others. He was Little Richard's bandleader from 1984 to 1995 and he's still kicking.

I agree, the refrain (?) does resemble that characteristic descending note series in Penetration.

I don't really see that much resemblance between Pipeline and Penetration. The bass part, sure, but the rest?

Really? It's basically just "Pipeline" played backwards.

And "Scratchy" is the same song as "Comin' Home Baby."

I remember bits and pieces of a recorded lecture by Leonard Bernstein - from a music class - junior high I think - about the difficulty of recognizing variations of melodies based on various inversions, including playing things backward. I think he illustrated by playing Happy Birthday backward on the piano.

I did, in desperation, break out the guitar and after some very awkward moments - I haven't played in a long time and never surf - I'd have to say that I think you must be right. I don't know if this is what the sources for those dimly recollected liner notes etc. had in mind, and I don't know where that leaves us vis-a-vis Scratchy, but, well, "Touche."

I also see what you mean about Comin' Home Baby (Mel Torme?).

Not only is there nothing new under the sun, but I'm beginning to wonder if there are that many different things, either.

I can't quite place it, but the part of Scratchy before the down sequence reminds me of one or two pieces by Link Wray. Ones along the lines of Slinky, I think.

Yup, that's the part I was talking about. Thumbs Up

I had a guy come up to me after a show a few years ago and say "you know that last song you guys played sounded like "Scratchy", so I had to check it out myself. Wink

you know there's also an early ska/rocksteady group called the pyramids who are awesome, and alter became syramip (get it - its pyramids backwards) and are known for the famous "skinhead moonstomp"
