I'll post summaries of my trip as well. Here is my account of Friday night @ The Purple Orchid.

I met Ivan at LAX around 5 or 5:30. Our flights were just 20 minutes apart. After getting the rental car we arrived at the Purple Orchid hours before the show started. We had a great dinner at an Italian place next door (in honor of Lorenzo?), catching up and relaxing from our traveling.

We then hung out in front of the Purple Orchid for a while as we didn't recognize anyone inside yet. After a while these two Australian dudes come up the street, carrying a big old Vox amp between them. It was Martin and his drummer Lloyd! Mandy was right behind them and suddenly our big weekend just kicked into gear. It was so incredibly cool to finally meet Martin, his band, and Mandy. While they were setting up, I got to talk to Janette, who plays bass for Martin, and Lloyd. Great people who I would see and talk to many more times over the next few days.

Also arriving was our dear leader Jeff Bigtikidude with Sean Berry from Double Crown Records and Danny Snyder. It was great meeting Sean in person, who I had been buying great music and corresponding with over the years. Bruce Brewington was there again this year, great seeing him again. Also present were Josh and his new wife, and Warren (CaptainSpringfield), fresh from working on the Teen Choice awards!!! And wow, in came strolling in Paul "Mr. Moto" Johnson himself!

The show was fantastic. I can only echo what Ivan said. Martin had the tone, chops, and songs to die for. His band was right on the money. Ivan played rhythm on the Atlantics' classic Bombora and Paul Johnson played 3 songs with Martin. It truly was a surf geeks dream show. Martin really has something unique and special going on, it was so fun to watch and hear.

Lorenzo was backed by our own Marty Tippens on drums and Jonpaul Balak on the bass. Lorenzo is seriously hardcore and I was in awe of his spirit and determination to spread surf music to the globe, whether he does it by playing the guitar, drums, or organizing massive surf festivals in Italy. Props to him. His music will delight trad surf lovers looking for an album that could have come out in the 60's. The crowd really dug his set as well and an encore was demanded and received.

After the show Danny, Ivan, and I spent lots of time saying goodbye to people and finally headed out to the 405 to drive to Don's Turf Motel to begin the next phase, the big convention itself. I had so much fun talking to Ivan and Danny on the way down. I love this community so much.

To be continued...

On the subject of this community.....as someone who could not attend I am thankful for these summaries and recounts.
I'll be looking for more of the videos this weekend, when I have more time but it sounds like it was absolutely amazing, music and people.
Hopefully next year.

The Tiki Crowd calls this feeling of a community Ohana.
Hawaiian for Family.
To me, as much as I like the Tiki Scene.
I think the tightness and sincerity of the surf community
Is better or more real.

I would like to thank Jeff and all of the folks that helped with the convention. This was one of the best weekends of my life. I made many new friends and was made to feel very welcome as a newcomer. I turned 50 and my wife wanted me to make the trip for a birthday present and it was a blast from start to finish. This was the best organized convention I have attended and can not thank everyone enough. I am even inspired to unpack my old strat and start playing again.

I couldn't agree with you more Jeff. While I love rockabilly a great deal, I don't have the rockabilly look. So as much as I love the music, I've never really felt a bond with that community. The tiki crowd is much, much better, but still, there are many that are pretty snobbish about having the right "tiki look".

The surf crowd is purely about the music. I saw a few people dressed up, but for the most part, it was just jeans and a t-shirt. Shows that little, if any thought, is given to how one looks - it's just about the music.

However, I'm going to slightly contradict myself - this weekend was about more than just the music for me. I would have been just as happy hanging out with all of the people I met, without any music at all. It was just so cool to hang out with a group of like-minded fans and talk about surf music (and other stuff as well). So the time I spent with people away from the music, or even the time between sets, was time I'll treasure just as much as watching the bands perform on-stage. I would perhaps even go so far as suggest that maybe for future conventions, that perhaps a block of time could just be used as a meet & greet. I did miss the meet up at Don's Sunday night though, so perhaps that kinda served as what I'm talking about. Definitely not a criticism of anything Jeff organized, just a desire to have a chunk of time set aside for fans and musicians to just hang out and talk.

You're absolutely right Jeff - sorry for completely spacing on that! Sheesh! I didn't get there until after it was over, but even so, it was a great kickoff to the weekend, seeing a few good friends and familiar faces still hanging out there.

Hope you've had a chance to get some rest!

So, after some sleep; a day of mowing dandelions and mole hills and hacking blackberries; and reflecting, I just can't say enough good about this year's SG101 Convention festivities. Some highlights for me (I'm sure that I'll overlook many...): As Big Wave Dave noted, a High Speed Weekend with the great community that is SG101! With that Penetrators lead-in, I just gotta say that the Penetrators tribute was so so great, as was hanging a bit with Stix, Trace and Trace's wife Andrea - what fine folks. With the Southern Surf Syndicate there in full force, I was absolutely floored by both the Mystery Men? and The Aqualads. Wow. My JM case now proudly sports an S3 sticker Smile The Pyronauts killed it with their super fun approach to great tunes - and interweaving the Sneaky Tikis along the way. Nice. Outerwave - solid and beautiful classic stuff as always, along with the Mermen's Curve taboot. I never miss a chance to see them. Mike Vernon and 3 Balls of Fire are really hitting on all cylinders - and with Davie Allen on Blues Theme - yowza. Rocking at the Starting Gate all day with Bruce and his recently-acquired Eddie's Jag (yes, that Eddie's Jag!!!) was a great way to immerse oneself in the beauty that is Surf. I concur with the preceding superlatives heaped upon Martin Cilia and Surfer Joe. Ivan on Bombora with Martin was so cool. Hell, Ivan with anybody on anything is so cool (Can you say Redlined and Red Sunrise?)! Chatting with Eddie of the El Caminos about his 57 Chevy gasser (his daily driver no less) was a great lead-in to the El Caminos sets - how about that over the top set at Don's on Sunday? Wow.

And hopping and bopping and generally digging it all the whole time was Emilio. What a great, energetic, intelligent young man and player. I expect great things to come from him.

And of course, tying it all together, making it happen Jeff Big Tiki Dude Hanson. Thank you for your dedication, love of Surf, and opening your house for the bbq. What a blast. See ya all next year.

Rick

Many thanks fro nice shows and beautiful people in California, off course Jeff.
See you next time in January SG101 convention.

Hello everyone,

personally the list of things to say about this year is too long for me. As you know I have been through a lot of stuff recently and I am still in the middle of it until next week.

I just want to summarize quickly now and THANK EVERBODY, everyone who I have met and seen, it is really a magic, unforgettable experience that will stick in my mind forever! The atmosphere in the surf music community worldwide is unique, whether is a small or big event, it is a true family, and I love it and proud to be part of this!

I will try to describe my feelings about this all very soon, but I share the excitement already expressed by some of you. I am really enjoying it fully and completely!

ciao.

So the word for what I felt and am feeling is Ohana. As far as I know, there is no surf song with that title.

Hint, hint to all our fine surf composers.
