I agree - such a cool guy, and really brought a smile to my face watching him dance and play air guitar - so cool! Great guy as well - had a chance to talk to him a bit. josheboy wrote: — Sean Surf CD's / Vinyl / Fanzines / DVD's |

Ken and I and our good friend Jack from KFJC are all home now. This weekend was super fun from beginning to end. It was Jack's first convention and he wants to return next year. Thanks BTD for all you do! Thanks to everyone whose hard work made this possible. Thinking back to the music, laughs and conversations from this weekend will keep me warm all winter. Come see us in NorCal - I miss you all! |

No kidding. This kid (he's 25) traveled all the way from Mexico City by himself and he attended nearly every event (and I think he is still there as I type this). And every single second he radiated fun and was grinning ear to ear. I even saw him helping Jeff tear down and haul equipment. I'm back home and got a good nights sleep in my own bed. I hope to start posting some lengthy thoughts and some photos later. Again, this was just an incredible, amazing, life changing event. There are so many good people in this community it is astonishing. I said this on stage but I'll repeat it here: Six years ago when Jeff was putting this crazy scheme into action, he could have called it "Jeff Bigtikidude's super awesome California spectacular Surf-a-pa-looza reverb explosion convention". But he called it the SurfGuitar101 convention instead. My heart swells with pride and respect for this man every day. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Well, this past weekend Jeff has really outdone himself. The convention was EPIC! I've only missed one (2009) so far, and this one was just amazing - though the last few were pretty amazing as well! What was even better this year was the sense of family and friendship, which was really deep and profound. There was a LOT Of hugging going on! Despite all of us not getting very much sleep at all this past weekend (really - not...very...much...AT...ALL!), there was such a palpable sense of joy that we got to see each other again and spend time together that it's really become one of my most anticipated things to do all year! And then combined with some of the most amazing music EVER, well, I'm still overwhelmed by the entire experience, still processing it all, feeling both elated and exhausted simultaneously. It was complete sensory overload for about 50 hours - starting around 9-10 pm on Friday, and going through 11 pm Sunday. So much happened in that time that it is impossible to write about even a fraction of it, but just a few highlights: Friday @ The Purple Orchid in El Segundo: Ivan Last edited: Aug 13, 2013 13:12:14 |

Thanks, Maxx! It was a pleasure seeing you again and even getting to jam with you! Young Maxx has really turned into a serious surf guitarist! I was just looking at YouTube, and I came across this video of him starting off the 2013 SG101 Convention at 9 am on Saturday with a scorching version of The Wedge, backed by Danny Snyder on rhythm and Lorenzo Surfer Joe Valdembrini on drums (though I must admit I'm not sure who's on bass, sorry). Rawkin'! I was in the back chatting with some people when he started, and I thought, hey, that's pretty rippin', I wonder who that is - what a nice surprise to see Maxx up there! And check out his new Strat! The Beast 2! (And I just realized that it was him that took those Penetrators videos above - thanks, Maxx!) —Ivan |

Thanks, Carol! It was a real blast, and something new and different for me, which I enjoy. I found this video of us playing Bombora at the HB Pier on Sunday - though, it sounds a bit messy, the mix isn't quite right, the drums are buried a bit too much. Or maybe I was just messing up and not playing in rhythm (a distinct possibility)!
Definitely next year, Carol! It was Richard's (of the Mystery Men) suggestion we do MoM, and I was happy to do it, but then we couldn't find anybody to play bass on it, so it all sort of fell apart, unfortunately. The Shadows' bass parts scare off most bass players. But c'mon, why should the guitarist be the only ones playing a lot of bum notes at the Sunday evening jam??? Anyway, it was still great to see you and your gorgeous Ventures JM jamming it up! —Ivan |

Here's the Astronauts tribute from the Convention - Jamie and Richard from the Mystery Men, Chris of the Aquasonics, Eddie Katcher & the drummer from the Surge (damn, can't remember his name now). (I'm looking for any videos I can't find of the Convention and the shows around it, but so far there's not much.) —Ivan Last edited: Aug 14, 2013 09:30:59 |

While the sound was consistently great throughout the Sunday show at the pier, for some reason the sound/mix during Martin's set on Sunday wasn't quite as good as the previous two nights. To me "Bombora" sounded the best on Saturday. The performances were definitely great all three days, it's just the sound/mix that was slightly off - just didn't quite have the edge of the other two nights. If I can make it down next year I'd love to spend the next year 12 months working on my bass (or guitar/organ) playing skills so I can participate in the member jam. I just wanted to get my thanks in to everyone, especially Jeff. Awesome as can be! Great bands, great vibe. Sorry I had to miss the pier show but caught everything else I could. Thanks again. |
