it depends what the question is for. if you play a lot of gigs the main difference is... the PRICE!!! all strings brake, all. all brands are shit, d'addario, thomastek, a bit better, but honestly they are not worth the money when you have to over used them and change them every 2 shows maximum.
I liked flats for the reason well described above, but I stopped using them after playing outdoor at Bali Hai for Tiki Oasis: umidity made them sticky to my fingers and dead in the sound especially using a showman amp where you want to get some power out.
But again if you are not playing much and you want to feel it better in the sound (on jaguar and jazzmaster) flats are better.
live on stage, with high volumes, crazy situations, imperfect sounding condition all that matters is the PRESENCE of your sound, more than the tone itself, so round wound are better for this with no doubts.

I have never used flats ever. I see no advantage to flats. I don't hear any advantage to flats. as brian said--DD and a lot of the early surf players used ROUNDS. I used rounds back then and still do today. and--I know a lot of blues guys that never used round wounds. some folks need to check history out and stop being language virtuosos. in the words of zappa--hush up and play your guitar..

Just put flats on my Mexican Strat (maple neck) and that instrument came to life and is useful for the first time (to me) as a 2nd back-up guitar for this band...

Strings shouldn't be breaking or wearing out that quickly. I've broken one string in about 8 years. If anything I play harder/more aggressively than when I started gigging. I've only seen one bandmate break a string in about the same time frame. How you string, and how you set up your guitar has a lot to do with strings breaking.
As for strings aging, you don't notice the sound of aged strings until they are black(4-6 months) or until you put the new set on. Body chemistry has a big effect on this. My skin isn't oily, but I do sweat when I play.

They are easier to learn to play surf on. The gauges are thicker so that helps double-picking, the dull thud, which is great, is easier to get a surf sound until you learn how to tame your guitar/amp/picking hand. And the real advantage to flats is personal preference!
