Permalink Dick Dale's current band

New Topic

I saw Dick last night at the Middle East. He looked a ton better than last year, but it seemed like he got tired as the night wore on.

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knows who's playing drums and bass this time around. I didn't recognize either guy, and didn't catch their names either of the times they were introduced.

Steve

Ron Eglit was on bass when I saw DD May 25th.

Don't recall the drummer...young guy with a huge kit.

Happy Sunsets!

I think the drums that all of DD's drummers play are actually Dick's. (Dane told me when we saw Dick two weeks ago: "no self-respecting drummer would own that kit!") Sam Bolle was with Dick until recently, but had to bail to go on a different tour (a previous commitment). He told me that Ron Eglit would be replacing him, but I saw just a bit of the webcast of the show a couple of nights ago, and that didn't look like Ron. However, Sam did tell me that he found this drummer right before the tour, and the guy had no previous connection to the surf music world. The first time he met Dick was two hours before the first show of the tour, and Sam was very much still guiding him through the set two weeks ago. With two new guys, it must be a wild ride for Dick!

I was lucky enough to see Dick play with Sam and Dusty a couple months ago, two musicians I admire as much or even more than the man himself.

IMO.

I saw him 3 weeks ago or so. He had Sam Bolle on bass and the new drummer (I spaced his name).

Last time I saw Dick play, Dusty Watson was on drums, and Ron Eglit was on bass.

back in May, he had Dusty and Sam.

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

I heard that Dusty got in a motorcycle accident recently.
I don't know all the details, but....
Needless to say, not playing for awhile.

This sums up my experience in Denver on July 7th. I'm not sure the drummer was actually introduced.

June 21st FB post from Rikki:

We've had a rough week to say the least. Dusty went down on his bike on the 91 freeway on his way to work. A lady crossed lanes without looking and hit him. Luckily, my husband is one tough SOB and was able to walk away. No major injuries, a separated shoulder and a pretty bad puncture wound. We are extremely grateful for that!!!

Ooooooooof!
That's terrible.

I spoke to the bass player after the show, and wrote his name and the drummer's into my I Phone 5 last night. Today the notes are gone

The bass' first name is GEOFF. The drummer is GERRY.

Wrote to LANA and hope to clear this up shortly.

Sam did tell me two weeks ago about Dusty's accident. I didn't know whether it was OK to share it. I know he got banged up a bit, but he was truly lucky, sometimes people don't walk away from stuff like that. Anyway, I don't think that was the reason that Dusty isn't out with Dick, I think he was scheduled to do another tour (the Sonics maybe?). I wonder if he can still do that. Best wishes to Dusty, here's hoping for a very quick recovery!

Funny this should come up, as we're now playing with one of Dick Dale's old drummers Ned Stroh. He played with Dale in the nineties. Our drummer situation is a bit weird at the moment (long story!) - so we got Ned in for the forseeable future, and it's working out great, everything is coming together quickly. Apparently, Dick is a hard task master where his band is concerned and really on top of what everyone is playing. The only weird part is: it is true that Dick won't allow his drummers to play a surf beat, so that everytime it comes up Ned unconciously slips into a "Dick Dale beat" from sheer force of habit!

Freddie, thank you for tracking that down. I've seen Dick play many times, and was very surprised I didn't recognize either musician playing with him.

Freddie, just saw your video from last night (great coverage, as always!). Is that yet another new/different bass player?

This is Geoff, the bass player's website - I talked to him a bit at the Beachcomber show. He is a record producer out of Seattle. He said he does the fill-in touring thing once in awhile, but really prefers to stay home and make his living mixing records and producing, as it allows hm to spend more time with his family, and I think probably makes him more $$. But he still seemed to be having plenty of fun up there. I saw DD giving him a few looks though, like during House of the Rising Sun. Yeah DD has high standards for his band - it's gotta be right, even if there is no rehearsal, lol.

Yeah, I just noticed it looked like Dick had Geoff in Brooklyn, and someone else 3 days later in Bay Shore, NY and was curious.

Bay Shore
Not that any of this really amounts to anything. Big Grin I'll be at the show tonight in Annapolis!

I remember when I saw him at the Diamond Ballroom in 1996, he took off walking through the crowd and all the sudden decided to sit down on top of the table I was sitting at and played for about 10 minutes. It was pretty cool!
