If I have a guitar with two humbuckers, neck and bridge position, is it possible to remove the bridge pickup and install a p-90, leaving the humbucker at the neck?
Thanks

The Duncan Phat Cat is a P-90 type pup in a humbucker cover, so that should work pretty good. |

I'd say it's definitely possible. Get yourself a nice P90 Soapbar and you're set. Though you may want to look into a new Pot for that P90 as well, up to you. ~Ace —I'm Batman...No not that Batman. :p |

You need to consider lipsticks: Can't recommend these guys highly enough: |

These pickups look like they might sound and work like the Danelectro Hodad Humbucker tubes... I like the Hodad's versatility..lots of cool tones. -dp |

pluto, Summary answer: Yes, it's doable. Slightly longer answer: If you have only one volume and tone control for both pickups, don't change either one. If you have separate volume and tone pots for each pickup, then plan on changing the P-90's volume pot to about half of what it was (500K down to 250K). Best overall answer: Check out http://www.guitarnuts2.proboards.com/, this is where they sweat the small details of things like what you're asking. Lots of help in the forums, and alternative wiring schemes galore. For all levels of DIY, or even those who are just interested in learning more about what goes on inside of their guitars. unlunf —MY RIGHT HAND IS FASTER THAN YOURS! |

If you don't want to route anything you can do a search on Vintage Vibe Guitars and find an array of P-90's that are already humbucker-size. I replaced the humbuckers in my Squier Jagmaster with their PS-90A's (or something like that) that are made with the same magnets Fender uses in their pickups. They sound pretty good and are pretty much drop-in replacements. —The Mystery Men? |

I have a set of Lipsticks on the way from Guitar Fetish, for my Squier Fat Telecaster. Should be an interesting sound, with a neck position humbucker Lipstick, and a bridge position Lipstick. I'm thinking "fatter Danelectro sound, with the bridge humbucker, but with some of the typical Tele twang since that's what they're going into." If I can remember, when I get the Lipsticks installed, I'll try the Fat Tele through my Vox T25 bass combo before I put it through my Guitar POD 2.0. Matt in Indiana —Fast Cars & Loud Guitars! |
