Nels Cline. Revolutionary in the field of free jazz guitar. Has played Jaguars and Jazzmasters almost exclusively since the early/mid 90s. And always with roundwounds.

Thanks for bumping this, that was an interesting read.

I'm curious though, I've heard of "groundwounds", roundwounds that have been shaved to feel more like flats... Anyone use these or have an opinion on them?

there were also strings that were round wound and then flattened by pressure rollers.. dunno if they are still made.

1) i didn't read the article.
2) i think most guitars can be set up quite well for any type of string and gauge. a lot has to do with the player. I've set up guitars for people with really heavy sets. I find to be fighting the guitar. I hand it over, they love it. I string nearly everything with Ernie Ball Super Slinkies (which are 9s) including my VM Jag. it works for me. What you prefer, well.. there you have it.
