Permalink Teach me how to do a legendary Tremolo Pick Slide

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I have been playing guitar a long time, and everytime I hear dick dale do one of his whopping tremolo pick slides (like on his cover of pipeline) I am wowed.

I am relativly new to the surf style of playing, so any tips on pulling off a killer tremolo slide, I am all ears.

well...start at a slow tempo at first...

8th notes on the picking hand...

slide your fretting hand slowly down the low E string while playing consistant 8th notes...start at fret 12 and see if you can make it to open E...consistancy on the tempo of picking and sliding will produce the best sound...

if that's too easy...try 16th notes...

as you raise the tempo, you'll start sounding more and more like Mr. Dale (or the Chantays) in no time...

oh, one more thing i forgot...

turn your amp up really loud...the magic energy of pure volume will inspire you into the ethereal realm of DickDale-ness...

that should make a wicked-tremolo-staccato-pick-attack-slide all the more easy to achieve...

good luck,
-dp

ill give it a some practive, thanks

You might want to try some different picks, too. If the ones you have are too soft, the precusiveness of tremelo picking is lost. If the pick is too hard, you may find that your attack needs improving. I use all kinds of picks. Lately I have been using a lot 1.5mm and 2mm full size stubbies. They aren't flat like typical picks. Strumming with them is different, but single note runs are a lot smoother for me.

But starting slow and gradually ramping the tempo is the best advise.

Good luck and keep practicing

Are you talking about the glissando, or does the tremelo actually come into play?

I believe he is talking about glissando. Dick Dale isn't a trem bar player.

Thanks, I was goin' nuts trying to figure out what a tremelo pick slide was.

I prefer the upper register dribble anyway. Laughing

Is that contagious? Laughing

Tremolo picking is the strict musical term for what we call double picking.

Naming the vibrato bar a tremolo bar is totally wrong, but something we apparently have to live with now. See also the "Vibrato Channel" on Fender amps (i.e. its really a tremolo effect).

Very, better use rubber gloves. (Hmmm... having an idea for a new band called "the Latex-tones" now...) Rolling Eyes

Brian is right, tremelo and vibrato often get confused. Vibrato is frequency (pitch) modulation, while tremelo is amplitude (volume) modulation.

Stigger, here's another tip: try muting the string a bit with your palm while you're double-picking if you want it to be drippier.

muting with the edge of the palm during staccato pick attack sounds great!

mike's right...mucho drippage...

Wonder which way this conversation would have turned if "The Vibrato" bar was referred to as the "The Whammy Bar"?

Another bad choice of words by a marketing department I assume? Wink

Don't get discouraged. I find that it takes a lot of practice, and I still have a few misses.

The band would have to stink.

You mean musically, or in an olfactory sense?

Like the Germs. "Why the name the Germs?" "Isn't it obvious? Because we make people sick."

<img src="klzzwxh:0000"></img>

Hey, them people was already sick before we even got there, and no one can prove otherwise.

Brian, as so much info on trem picking has been shared through the years, it'd be nice if it was collected from the waning surfguitar101 list and posted as a Sticky somewhere in the forums.
