Frankie,

It is an honor to have you with us here at SG101. Welcome aboard.

I am in awe that Dave Stoll was able to keep playing while struggling with multiple myeloma. My father had been battling that cancer also. So I have some experience of its effects.

I look forward to hearing your new works.

Talk to you later,
Norm

Thanks Norm....Yeah Dave did well for a long time. The treatments added years to his life and he was in pretty good shape for most of those years.
Sorry to hear about your dad.I lost mine to prostate cancer. My father taught me just about everything I know about music.

I have another guitar player friend who is dealing with this same disease as we speak. He just retired from Amtrak as a diesel mechanic after about 40 yrs and was diagnosed with it shortly after .

Anyway...turn up the reverb and get crackin'

Frankie

Frankie,

As you said, I also think/listen your Jazzmaster's tone has that 'mojo' we all guitar players would die for. The perfect blend between guitar & sax takes place in your recordings. It is just like you are having a friend talk with Dave, blows my mind! Smile

I think of gear as a source of inspiration and my Jazzmaster is the muse that helps me create or develop new sounds & melodies. As you said, yours helped you in past years and I'm sure it still does.

Would you mind telling us the story about how did you get your guitar? Cool

When you have to shoot ... shoot! Don't talk.

Hi Frankie! One of my favorite Fathoms tunes is "Getaway Car". I was wondering if you had any stories about writing, playing, or recording that song? Thanks!

Frankie, GREAT to see you here! Welcome!

Witnessing you guys in Philadelphia in November/December '96 (The Middle East?) was a pretty defining moment in stirring up and making permanent my passion for surf music, as well as opening my eyes even further to the continued possibilities for being creative and doing something individualistic in this genre. That was just an AMAZING show! In particular, I remember you guys playing Shark Waves, which obviously wasn't released yet, and being so blown away by that!

May I suggest that, as much as I like the third album, the first two are your truly classic albums, and I think some important part of that is due to the band that was on those recordings. Of course, Dave played a HUGE role, and his sax playing was absolutely remarkable, definitely the best in modern (post-'60s) surf music, but we shouldn't forget the other guys - Greg on rhythm guitar and Johnny on bass were creative and tight and simply perfect, but I personally think that Stan on drums was really the engine of that band. Stan is WAY underrated as a surf drummer. I was privileged to see you guys play on 3 or 4 occasions, and each time I was completely blown away by Stan's drumming. Incredible feel and touch, and a thorough understanding of the surf genre.

It's truly wonderful news that there will be another Fathoms album and that you have all the songs written already, but I would personally lobby that you try as much as possible to assemble the original band to record this next album - that alchemy of musicians was special and maybe even a big magical.

Once again, great to see you here, and hope you'll continue to join us here!

I've actually also been revisiting Fathom This! lately and really glad I did. Such great playing on this one with a wider variety of styles than the first two records. However much I love the first two records, Fathom This! is a testament to how great and tasteful a guitar player Frankie is. The Palomino, Dark Secret, Panito and Pony Express are the standouts for me on that album.

Thanks Again Everyone

I like the reference to Tuco...My all time favorite western. Eli Wallach for my money was the real star of that film..

A friend of mine in Boston has a store with nothing but crazy vintage guitars and amps. Its called Bay State Vintage Guitar. I always wanted a Jazzmaster because I knew the sound that I was after could only come from a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar. He happened to have a Jazzmaster in the shop. I think I traded a Marshall amp and some cash for that guitar. One of the best purchases I ever made. I think it amounted to about $750.00

As far as Getaway Car goes I honestly don't know how I came up with that tune. Sometimes I'll sit down with my guitar and things just come together quickly as in the case of this tune. It's one of my faves also and was written relatively painlessly. No analysis paralysis if you know what I mean.

It would be great if I could get the original band back together even if just for a show or two. But all the original members are busy with other projects plus touring etc. and Dave is no longer with us. I agree that Stan was an incredible driving force. Nimble, very fast hands and very knowledgeable about all kinds 50s and 60s music genres. It's all good. Thanks for those of you who dig the first two albums and those that dig all three. I really do appreciate all the interest....

oh wow! i just came back to this thread and Frankie Blandino is here!!! That's so cool1. As you can see, you have a lot of fans here... and for good reason. You've made some of the best intro surf records out there.

i was coming here to let folks know that iTunes has Overboard. i had been looking for that one for a while, and i saw it last night and bought/downloaded it right away. i see what the fuss is all about... it really is a great record! Fathom This! has been in my car since i got it (and on my iphone of course) i just love that record.

have you ever thought about butting a Guitar Tab book together? something for us lazy and busy guys Smile

Hi Guys and Gals...

Thanks in advance for all the kind words.
As far as a Guitar Tab Book goes, I think I'd need one myself at this point ha,ha. I haven't played some of those songs since I recorded them.I play with The Fathoms so infrequently that when I do have a show, sometimes I'll have to go back and listen to my own recordings to figure out how the heck and where the heck on the neck I played certain passages. I think it would be cool though if there was enough interest in a tab book that I'd consider it. I'm not much of a technician though and would need lots of help putting something like that together.

Regarding a Tab book; Danny Amis from Los StraitJackets put together 2 tab books himself and sells them off his web site. Here's how it can be done...

  • Get some software that allows you to write Guitar tabs in a quick and easy way. I'll have a look for free tools on the web

  • Get a PayPal account so you can receive money and orders.

  • Once an order is received (and money is in PayPal) Danny sends the PDF version of the tab book to the person who made the order by email. The customer's email is ion the order sheet from PayPal.

The cool thing is that there is a never a printed version made, so very little overhead. Just a PDF file that has the Guitar Tab. The Buyer can print if they like.

You need to have a small web site so customer can order the Tab book. But you can get this set up for under $10 / month. of course there are other solutions as well.

if you ever decide to do it and need any help, let us know. I'm sure me or someone else on this site would be willing to assist

I'll be first in line to buy one!

Thanks Park Rowe...

It all sounds so complicated to me so if I decide to do this you'll be the first to know. I'm such a dinosaur...!!!

Frankie

Hi Frankie, no problem! I assure you, it's a lot easier that it looks Smile

Cheers Chris

Excellent thread. Welcome to SG101 Frankie!

Spinning some Fathomless now at work. It is the sound of pure reverb perfection!

The Fathoms are popular in Denver, too! There used to be a bar with, as I recall it, Fathom This in the jukebox.

And by the way, there's a Dave Sholl appreciation thread, too, unfortunately posthumous:

http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/18518/

You guys need to start a campaign to get Frankie to move out to So Cal and start up the Fathoms out there - he's under-appreciated out here on the East Coast !

It'd be great to see him there! Or in Boston for that matter. It's definitely on my list to see him somewhere.

I would be interested in having Frankie
At the SG101 convention.
Frankie, shoot me a email at bigtikidude@yahoo.com
And well discuss it, if yer interested.

I would love a Tab book...and maybe playalong tracks, too! I was toying with tabbing out a few Fathoms tunes this summer, but I never seem to find the time.

A very cheap and easy option would be for Frankie to video himself playing along to each song. Sell me a DVD of Frankie playing the tunes and I am one happy camper! Maybe Unsteady Freddie could be enlisted here?

Frankie, I think you mentioned remixing one or more of the albums? That would be a great time to consider making playalong mixes (lead removed, etc). I am always puzzled why bands don't do this more..especially considering that the Ventures practically invented the concept.

6v6, that's a terrific idea, but I suppose you've searched YouTube thoroughly? There's a lot of good stuff out there now. Usually shot from the wrong angle in poor light, but who knows.

And seriously this is not as easily arranged for or done as said. It took me several years to get around to doing a sort of suitable video of one local guy doing one song of his own that someone wanted to see. I had to coincide with him camera in hand by chance as he played it live in the right light on a night where I could pretty much stand where I wanted. It was never really on his agenda at all, of course, just mine. It's easy to ask for this, but people who play guitar well tend to get a sort of impatient feeling that if you were serious you wouldn't need the visuals. You would just work at it and suddenly, in a year or two, or three, or however long it took, you would just be able to do it by ear, or at least get to the point where ear would tell you where your fingers were supposed to go even though they weren't going to be capable of going without a lot more practice. And, of course, when you get to that exalted point, who needs the tabs. I have enough of a glimmering, mostly from passively watching, that I can see their point though most days I need visuals to remember how to hold a guitar. It seems almost within grasp that I could get from what I hear for a chord to a fingering, if I could hear the chords clearly in the first place and just spend a few years working on it ... It's sort of like those old Greeks claiming that if you were worthy to recite Homer you would remember it without needing to write it down. And who says it has to be the same way each time?

Anyway, relatively few people have the generous soul of Dave Wronski or Ferenc Dobronyi as far as teaching other people their songs. They wonder what's in it for them. Immortality is all very well, but not as much fun when you can't enjoy it yourself. Sure, make and sell the DVD, but does the market justify the effort?

Plus, I've always assumed that Cranky might not just rhyme with Frankie.
