Hi Everyone..I'm blown away that anybody would even care about about what I'm up to never mind an appreciation thread..!! In answer to some of your questions. I believe Overboard and Fathom This are still available from MuSick in cd format and also have been released digitally recently.
John( the original bass player for The Fathoms ) and I have been talking recently about re-mastering and re-releasing Fathomless complete with bonus tracks and out takes. He's always been my right arm when it comes to the technical stuff. He's always on the road playing, so hopefully when he finds some time we're going to try to make this happen. Thanks again to everyone. I might go back and revisit Fathomless myself and see what all the hub-bub is about. That first Fathoms lineup was just magic. Since then Dave Sholl the sax player has sadly passed away and it was his stellar,inspired exotic style of playing that really helped launch The Fathoms' sound. He was a great friend and an inspired painter, artist and musician...!!! He lives on in his paintings and recorded music..So thank you brother Dave for enriching all of our lives...

So great to see you on here Frankie! Thanks so much for posting to this thread. A re-release of Fathomless would be fantastic!

frankie, you are a master of surf guitar,your melodies are incredible beautiful and the sound of your records are rich, full and unique!! in my opinion, fathomless is the best reverb sound ever rocroded, legendary as the sound of "surfin` with the astronuats".......thanks for your music and your inspiration, you have a fan in argentina forever  !!

Thanx again everybody...I wish I could recreate whatever it was that made Fathomless what it became ... I think a combo of really lo-fi recording techniques (some of it was recorded on an 8 track Fostex tape recoder in someone's granite basement) and the equipment that we used at the time.Plus, we were all of the same mind and were really trying to nail that heavy reverb Astronuats vibe.

Frankie, if its not too much trouble, would you mind talking a bit about the equipment used during that time of the Fathoms? Particularly your Jazzmaster setup (string type/gauge, picks, etc?). Sorry for the trite gear inquiry, but you're in the bowels of gear geekery here

yeah.
I used a silver faced Fender Twin circa pre master volume maybe 1970 .
Also a re-issue "63" reverb unit. On some of Fathomless I used a real vintage reverb unit that I borrowed which actually had a much better and mellower tone. For strings I used regular round wounds no particular brand but really heavy. I can't remember the exact gauges cause I'm always changing string gauges to suit my playing styles. They were heavy though and I remember not really being able to bend them very much. I would like to use flat wounds for obvious surf guitar reasons but I really need to be able to bend a bit to accommodate my style of playing. I hope this was helpful. Nothing earth shattering. It's just that my 65 Jazzmaster has such great tone. That guitar really helped me to write a lot of those tunes back then because it just sounded so right..!!!

Frankie, your recordings are always at the top of my list and you are one of the reasons that I had to have a Jazzmaster! Love that tone! The rest of the band, not to mention the writing, is great as well!!
Sorry to hear of Dave's passing..glad he was able to record a legacy with you. Can you recommend other recordings of his?

I would love to see more video of you playing Fathoms tunes...is there more out there that hasn't made it to youtube? I would pay for a dvd of a full show in a heartbeat!!!

Hi 6V6...
Dave played in a band called Four Piece Suit.
They were an instrumental band that did a variety of styles
that really featured Dave's playing. Dave was also a songwriter and I'm sure
a lot of the tunes on their cds were penned by him. As far as DVDs of The Fathoms,I know as much as you do. I'll just come across stuff on youtube that someone has recorded at a club and puts it on there without my knowledge. Sometimes they catch me having a really bad night,clamming it up all over the place which is very embarrassing for me. Other times it's just the opposite and I think " hey not bad. " I guess we're all are own worst critics. Someday maybe I'll put together some kind of compilation on DVD but till then I guess you'll just have to rely on random youtube stuff.

This news of Dave Sholl's passing truly saddens me. I have been a longtime fan of his playing with both The Fathoms and Four Piece Suit. The man was a genius when it came to playing that sax.Possibly my favorite sax player of all time. If it's not too much ask Frankie,can you give us some details to his passing ?

Welcome, Frankie. I can only echo what everyone else has already said. I think "Fathomless" was one of the first ten "modern" surf albums I acquired, and it's been in the rotation ever since. Truly one of the all time great albums (not to dismiss the others) and far and away some of my favorite sounds. Thanks for popping in.

Hi...Dave Sholl was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (which is cancer of the plasma cells) many years ago. He lived with the disease while receiving treatment for several years before finally succumbing to it. During that time he continued to play, tour and record He was a very passionate,gifted human being..!!
As far as The Fathoms putting out another recording,Im sure it'll happen at some point. I just don't have any immediate plans for recording. I've got a lot of tunes ready to go though...!!
