The les paul has p-90's. The firebird has minihums, Jake has a lot of experience with those. Supposedly work fine for surf.
You can make bright humbuckers sound delicious, and there are dark singles as well, that to my ears sound terrible for surf. Seems that it all boils down to personal taste.. And you are your harshest critic.

You are correct, that Les Paul does have P-90s, I didn't look at it very well.
Rick is one of those guitarists that could make a shoe box with a rubber band sound good.

Interesting thread. Also makes me feel more justified wanting to get a Gretsch when I don't really need one.

The Firebird is a humbucker and mini, but they aren't what are referred to as mini humbuckers. There are PAF style mini humbuckers which are called mini humbuckers by most people and then there are Firebird Mini Humbuckers. Completely different construction!
Dark singles, I love them. The amount of wire/windings is the largest culprit on a 'dark' sound. Some people call it full, some call it dark. It being a humbucker doesn't really make it dark/full except humbuckers usually have a lot of wire/windings.

I use humbuckers, but I switch them to single coil mode. The humbuckers are too thick and throaty for me personally. I like a very crisp single coil sound. I have been using my JS2400 for all my instrumental stuff and I like the way it cuts through. I have Strats but I prefer the JS2400. To each his own. It's best just to experiment and find what you like.

I've got two humbucker equipped Gibsons. A Les Paul and a SG. The SG on the bridge pickup picked near the tune-o-matic and you'd think it was a Telecaster. Cranked through a big amp like a Twin Reverb it breaks up and gets a twangy almost Mosrite tone.
My Les Paul is muddier.

Anybody here play with buckers?
Personally I think you would have alot of trouble surfing with a single coil pickup. They are so small I would not consider them a viable replacement for an actual surf board.
In all seriousness though, on one of my Fender strats I use the Dimarzio Paul Gilbert Injector set. Very versatile, quiet, and you can make them sound like strat pups or buckies. they have a very distinctive strat voice and I always feel the middle position on that one is best for surf as it is definitely the most strattiest pickup in the bunch. I like strats!

I concur that you can surf with anything. But there is often that visual image i get from all the old movies, videos, album art, photos... Surf, like rockabilly, southern rock, mod/pop, punk.. the all have their associated gear.

It all comes down to how good the music is! Somebody trying to copy the old surf classics with a Les Paul and Marshall even with a tank is probably going to fail. Somebody with the same set up playing original music that is a reflection of the person, is probably going to have success.

Listen to Elliot Easton's Tiki Gods album Easton Island. Firebird (Tiki ird model) a 335 and a Barney Kessel. Sounds fantastic.

I think a Gibson SG looks just as era appropriate for first wave surf as any Fender.

Hmm, not too sure about that personally

I believe one of the other Tiki God's guitarists uses an Italia Modena as well. Again with the mini hums! Easton has always been a kind of out of the box guitarist, too.

Well, so is somebody with a single coil guitar and fender amp as well. Copying gets one nowhere.

I don't like the Ventures, and I hardly think we can accuse Dick Dale of copying!
