Permalink Celestion Greenback for a Deluxe Reverb RI?

New Topic

I remember Eddie Katcher at some point raving about a Celestion Greenback in a Deluxe Reverb. My DRRI still has the stock speaker which sounds fine at lower levels, but as soon as the amp is turned up above 3-4, it just dies. Maybe it's time to replace it. I'm usually not a fan of Celestions in Fender amps, but given the big midrange scoop on this amp, I thought a mid-heavy Celestion might be a good combination, giving it a bit more of a brownface tone (at least move it in that direction). Am I right about this, or way off? Any experience/thoughts?

G12H is a very popular replacement speaker for Deluxe Reverbs in Nashville.
I use a very good copy by Mojotone, BV-30H, in my Princeton Reverb and get a lot of compliments. Still sounds Fendery-ish (my new phrase)and there's no tendency for cone cry with the Mojo version.
Almost every time we finish a show here in town someone is looking in the back of my amp, LOL.

Thanks very much, CrazyAces! The Mojotone speaker seems very cool, I'm very interested. Great price, too. Do you know if there'd be much speaker breakup with one of those in a DRRI? (My preference is for as little speaker breakup as possible, though I'm not absolute about that.)

Well, there will be less breakup but not the headroom of say a JBL or something like that.
Typically the BV-30H makes the amp seem a little louder, tighter low end and better harmonic distortion or sweetness in the mids, all while retaining nice highs.
My experiences with this speaker is that it allows me to use my Princeton Reverb in small clubs here where it would otherwise be a little small and weak sounding, especially for the genre.

Ivan, over the years I've had three Deluxe Reverbs with four different speakers, including a Greenback. Here are my observations regarding tone and headroom, FWIW

All these amps have (or had) upgraded, quality tubes.

'68 Silverface with Celestion G12M (British, not MIC)
Beautiful, creamy sound. Perfect for recording. Some breakup as the volume increases, though. But it is good-sounding breakup.

Deluxe Reverb Reissue with Tone Tubby 40/40 hempcone
Very loud, lots of clean headroom but in this application, it was very harsh and brittle sounding. I sold this speaker and replaced it with the following:

Deluxe Reverb Reissue with Electro-Voice EVM12L
This is the one you want if you are looking for minimum breakup at louder volumes. This was the loudest, cleanest Deluxe Reverb I've ever played through. The downside is that the The amp weighed nearly as much as a Twin Reverb because of the huge E-V magnet. MUCH, MUCH better tone than the Tone Tubby but not as "sweet" sounding as this one:

1965 Deluxe Reverb (not a reissue) with Weber California Alnico
For me, this is "The One". Sounds much like a D-130F but it's not as ice-picky as the JBL. It has almost as much clean headroom as the E-V but not quite. However, in the Deluxe Reverb I really prefer the smoother tone of the Weber over the E-V, the latter of which is one of my favorite speakers...The monster EVM-L's are probably happier in the more powerful 40-100 watt Fenders. The AlNiCo Cali in this 20W amp is nearly as musical as the DRRI with the Greenback but with way, way more headroom.

Note that a ceramic Cali does have a more aggressive, "sharper" tone than the smoother AlNiCo version.

Deluxe Reverb.......Clestion Greenback. That's my story and I am sticking with it. Louder, cleaner, way more bottom end than the stock setup. After all a Deluxe Reverb is a compact, fairly lightweight tone master with those beautiful 6V6's which to old dude here, are way more musical than 6L6's, but way less output. It's the old trade off dealie. I used a Deluxe Reverb as my principal gigging amp with my Les Paul for years playing Top-40. Put it up off the ground, turn up the volume and treble to 10 and ease up the bass to fill in the presence and wee ha!

At some point some years back, the DR was superceeded by a '93 Fender Concert amp. Stock it would blow off the DR and with the JBL K-120 that ended up in it, It was damn amazing. Most of the Surge tracks on "Who's Idea Was This?" and "Garage Sale Surf" were recorded with it. When I got into the '62 Bandmaster insanity, I chucked the Concert. Damn, that was a dumb move.

I think if I get another DR, I'll just leave it stock. Anybody got a Concert for sale? I still have my K-120.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Thanks so much, everybody. I actually had Weber Calis in a Fender Custom Dual Professional I had, and I wasn't crazy about those speakers in that amp (though that was my setup for recording of the Sandstorm and Ruins CDs). I found them a bit too 'spikey', too harsh. Anyway, I'm really leaning to trying the Mojotone speakers, the BV-30H. Those sound very interesting, and the price is right. I'll probably give those a shot soon.

Thanks again!

Ivan,
FWIW, almost all of the guitar tracks on our record were recorded through these speakers, BV-30H , with my Princeton Reverb except "Bangers" and "Jedds Gold Sled" so if you have some spare time to check out the varied sounds on our reverbnation site you'll hear what these speakers can do, Now, I know what they feel like and sound like in person is a different thing for all of us but just as a tonal reference I thought I'd mention that.
They record (in my amp) very, very easily.

Jeff, it seems that the Mojotone BV-30H only come in 16 ohms. The DRRI is 8 ohms. Am I missing the 8 ohm version of the speaker, or did you just go with the mismatch and aren't worrying about it?

I have a 1968 drip edge Deluxe Reverb (blackface circuit) with a Weber C12N Ferromax 30watt speaker and an AT7 instead of an AX7 in V2 and it has LOTS of headroom...

Weber 12A125A vintage series are nice in a PR or DR. Get the 30W version. Just sayin'.
