Hells yeah trappist ale rules!
If you havent yet try the Chimay Triple (white cap) its awesome smooth, and balanced at a whopping 8%.
Westmalle is my fave abby ale.
I've had the white (triple), but for some reason, I always like the blue a little more. I think there's a little more "bite" to the white which I don't like quite as much.
I'll have to see if I can find this Westmalle that you're talking about...

It's got more water and less piss than regular PBR.

Oh, Bill - you are an eclectic beer enigma (at least to me)
In general, Belgian ales rock big time! Their complexity is just awesome! Even though it's not a real Belgian, in Portland/Seattle I got to have some Fat Tire Amber Ale from the folks at New Belgium in Ft. Collins, CO - I always look forward to that, 'cause we can't get it here on the East Coast. Good stuff!
Today, I brewed an imperial IPA (Pliny the Elder clone) which should turn out to be about 8% alcohol by volume, with a ton of hops (over a pound for a 5 gal. batch) to balance the maltiness - wow! Can't wait for the tasting of that one!
When we were in school in central PA, we drank a lot of Yuengling Porter which was available for under $10 / case (in early 1980's dollars) - yikes! We really had it good for poor students!
Cheers!

Dick,
What can I say? I have champagne taste sometimes, but most of the time I have a PBR budget. Plus, you gotta remember - the more PBR you drink, the better the Belgians taste (and the more they knock you on your ass) when you drink them.
PBR Light isn't as bad as some might think. I'd say that in general it does a better job of tasting like the real version of the beer than most other lights I've had the misfortune of trying.

Okay folks,
I had a really tasty beer the other day that WASN'T Pabst Blue Ribbon. It was a "Lev Lion" Double Bock. Apparently it's from a Czech brewery. I don't know if I can find it anywhere else around here, but man, I tip my hat to whoever made it. It was a great "in between" - it wasn't as dark as a Chimay, but it wasn't light like your traditional lager.
If you get the chance, check one out - it'll do ya right!

Jon -- I ain't gonna say... I at least set up the rule that I wouldn't start drinking until noon on day two. I certainly had my fair share.
Eddie - I do really enjoy some nice "real" beer from time to time, but when you can supply two days worth of drinking at a recording session for under thirty bucks, you're doing well.
Cheers!!

That's the draw back to having recording studios at My place, Sticks's house, WoodyJ's and Mitch's. We are way too close to the refridge to get much serious recording done.....but.......we're happy campers. Right, Richard?...........ed

Eddiekatcher, you're not close to a frig when you're in your studio.. its two flights up and a woman with a shotgun is standing in front of it.

Doooodes,
If you guys are into it, every year we go to the Brewsapoolaza at Mammoth Mountain during the Summer. Almost every microbrew from California is represented and it's a great time in the mountains with blues tunes playing the whole weekend. You are handed a 3 oz. glass and told to "have at it". Killer time up in the Sierras. I recommend it for all you surf music/beerthusiasts! A beer buzz at 9,000 feet is an amazing thing!
Here is a link to the event: http://www.mammothmountain.com/bluesapalooza/
Cheers,
Ted
