They are my favorite band but I've heard a lot of Surf musician say that they weren't a real Surf Rock band. I think that even if they did not make a lot of instrumental songs, they had the Surf Rock sound in their vocal songs like "Surfin USA", "Little Honda" and even in new songs like "That's Why God Made the Radio". But they did make their own instrumental like "Stoked", "Surf Jam", "Shut Down Part II" and "Carl's Big Chance". And let's be fair here, if it weren't for them maybe Surf Rock would have stayed as a local style of rock cause by 1963 they were the Top Surf Band in the nation and their sound spread around the world quickly. Let me know your thoughts about this topic.

Vocal surf pop. I love the beach boys, a lot on here would disagree. If you click on the 50 years banner at the top of the page, it will take you to an article that covers this a little. Listen to the pet sounds sessions, Brian Wilson has some pretty surfy tones, lots of reverb.

I think this issue has long ago been settled by the "agree to disagree" clause. Frankly, who cares? It's all great music and 99.9% of anyone under 35 don't even know what surf music is let alone who's legit or not

 i totally agree with the baron there. the BB.s were a surf band even with the vocals. they 've been around for years so of course their music evolved like any good band would have. helluva of a good bunch!!

Norm is dead on, they are held in very high-esteem here. I think whether people like the Ventures or not is more of a debate than the Beach Boys.
Are they an instrumental surf band? No. Did they define surf culture for most of America? Absolutely. Are they are surf band? You bet.

I was born in 1950, so I grew up listening to all the music on the Radio in the days of The first Beach Boys and I Surfed 1963-68 in Santa Cruz area. We listened to them all the time and Loved it. I knew all the words too. I also heard Surf Music instrumentals and Loved it too. Apache and Pipeline were just as popular and Beach Boys music. No difference to us...just music on the Radio. Cars and Girls were way more important then trying to figure out the Rock 'n Roll vs Surf thing.

Hmm.. Sorry, I thought I recalled some Beach Boy hate in my lurking days on this website, before I joined. Maybe it was complaints about BB's Live,, which wouldn't surprise me.

Dude... they were awful in the late 70s-80s. Embarrassing. Well... it was Mike's fault. I'd hate to place the blame on Carl and Dennis.

I think the sound relies on the many layers of sound that build and cooperate, and Mike's voice was screwing with all the layers and harmonies. Not only that, but his voice didn't quite sit right in that time. Speaking of the beach boys, anyone seen "the wrecking crew"? It looks really good, I may have to buy it.

I don't think anyone would pose the question "Were The Astronauts a real surf band?", would they? Yet, they (like the Beach Boys) became primarily a vocal band.
So, there's your standard.
What people are really asking is "Were the Beach Boys a REAL surf band?"
'Real' is a real slippery word.
I think the most accurate thing to say is; Yes, originally, The Beach Boys were a real surf band. Possibly one of the best. Anyone who saw them in 1962 and 1963 (like I did) would agree, I'm sure.

I like the Beach Boys and the Ventures, but Greg the Keg nailed the original zeitgeist of 60's surf era when he said, "Cars and Girls were way more important then trying to figure out the Rock 'n Roll vs Surf thing."
I don't remember too many discussions about musical taxonomy back then.

I beg to differ young man, I actually saw them for the first time in the early 70s when Surf's Up had just come out, they were awesome, vocals were perfect.

For the record:
HUGE Beach Boys fan. I grew up singing four part harmonies with my dad and my brothers as a kid so I am genetically biased.
Mom would sing the tenor parts and the one brother that was truly tone deaf- we made him snap his fingers and hum, quietly.....

The Beach Boys were a "real surf band" ! "Stoked", "Moondawg" & the rest of their 1st 2 albums...YES a REAL SURF BAND ! (Even if I was on Long Island...lol). I saw em' on Atlantic City, NJ's "steel pier" in 1969 & they were GREAT !
