This was a recording me and some friends did about 10 years ago. We set up live in the sudio and recorded 5 songs in 5 hours..Never played together but we were all in seperate bands. We called ourselves "The Wavebenders"had an album cover and all, anyway enjoy..more to come from that "surf saturday" Song is Calhoun Surf..Not sure of original band name but the Ventures did a version also.

You recorded 5 songs in 5 hours without having played together before? You just setup, rehearsed a bit, and recorded live while you all played, right? And you sound this good? I can hardly wait to hear the other 4.

That's pretty darn awesome. You based it off the Ventures version, yeah? I like how you (and they) they do that key change towards the end. Plus, your solo was perfect. Nothing overplayed - just perfect!

I know Danny wrote it! Ha.
But The Ventures covered it live and then recorded it for their New Depths album. On Danny's version with Los Straitjackets, it stays in the same key for the whole song. The Ventures added a section that modulates up into a different key (and stretches the song out another 30 seconds by adding a solo section). I was commenting that this version seems like it was based on the Venture's version - rather than the LS version.

hbrookes!
Why don't you make a band (or you have one)? I'm a "home player" now, and it's killing me, no volume, no interaction, no audience

It was recorded by Danny's band The Overtones before Los Straitjackets.

Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread, I just think it is interesting to hear all the different versions.

Yeah, I think the Raybeats version came before the Overtones.

Paul, I don't think so. The Overtones version was first, then it was rerecorded by the Raybeats, and then finally by Los Straits. And then of course eventually by the Ventures! (Is there a greater honor for any surf song than to be recorded by the Ventures??)

I thought Danny was in the Overtones before the Raybeats. From http://www.twintone.com/index.html:
Shortly before head Overtone Danny Amis went off to join New York's Raybeats, we released these three surf-pop orginals. "Calhoun Surf" on the flip later turned up on the Raybeats' PVC/Jum debut, "Guitar Beat" - notes from a 1984 Twin/Tone catalog
Released by Twin/Tone on May 21, 1980, it sold 423 copies. This project is "out of print."
Wikipedia says The Raybeats Guitar Beat was released in 1981.

Curiously Danny doesn't mention explicitly recording that song with the Overtones in the Guitar World article, just that he wrote it then.
