Keep things in a good cost bracket but good sound.

Thanks, Jeff.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

More surfy than dream 90's, would you say?

IMO.

Preston, I would think so, although I have no first hand experience with the Dream 90's so don't quote me.

FWIW, all of the Eastwood P-90's I've encountered in the last few years were pretty bright, much brighter and clearer than a newer Gibson P-90.
I agree, Listicks do sound great with Bari's though.
Allparts offers conversion necks which work fine for Tele and Strat.

That's good to hear!

Boy have I found a guitar for a baritone conversion then. I know where one of these is available for a song. Or is this a terrible idea?

What guitar is this!? Could I replace the bridge with a floating strat one?

Thanks. Thinking of using hb sized custom wound p90's on my first original, although gfs may suffice for a while.

IMO.

If you don't mind or can do some router work.

Is it that simple to convert a tele to baritone? Just a longer scale neck?

Yes, if said neck is a conversion neck, i.e. it has been made to adapt to a body with normal (25.5") scale bridge placement.

Face Palm
Forgot to mention that since the Blacktop bari neck is a Tele style neck (with square end) it will only fit a body with a Tele style neck pocket, like the Squier '51 Noel showed. If you want to put it on a body with a rounded neck pocket (like a regular Strat, a Jazzmaster or most other guitars) you'll have some routing to do.

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

Just keep in mind that when you change the physical size of a pickup's bobbin and magnetic field that it will never sound "exactly" like the original so while HB sized P-90s are cool and can sound quite good they will almost never sound just like P-90's

And now I'm out because I need to get back to work and everyone's heard about enough of my opinions. This site is too much fun! LOL

Thanks Jeff! Have fun at work! Big Grin

I don't really expect or even want them to sound like P-90's, hence the custom wound part. I'm hoping for something with less bite, and more jingle and clarity.

Not only that, but they look amazing with tort inserts.

IMO.

It's a Squier '51. Very unique guitar. No longer made. Comes with a coil splitter on the humbucker for single-coil tones.

Seem to be numerous Bari guitars in the $400-$500 range and more than a few for less than that. I suspect most are sold on the basis of "Hey! That would be cool!" and sold later after sitting around for too long. Suggest you try a few out, if you can find them, as I don't remember seeing any local around here.

Yep, sounds reasonable. I intend to go to Chicago for a few days and buy one from there. And ofcourse I'll play the heck out of it before I buy.

Odd that no one mentioned the obvious, prototypical Baritone, Danelectro. I got a used Danoblaster (like a Hodad quasi-Mosrite solidbody) used for $275 in like-new condition, in a hot orange sunburst. It plays great and sounds way more 'alive' than either the Eastwood or the Gretsch (both Chinese-made) that cost more than twice as much.
Korean-made Danos are pretty good cheap guitars. This one has the Strat-type whammy bridge and it stays in tune; all the parts are quality and fit well. Sure, it's not a Jerry Jones and doesn't play 'like buttah' but pretty good for less than $300.
The other night Trey Spruance played a whole set of John Zorn's 'Masada' with his Secret Chiefs 3, on a Dano single-cut Baritone, playing lead, chords and bass all over the neck with abandon. THe '59 model has the rosewood bridge and I noticed no intonation issues. Trey was ripping it up, using the neck pickup the whole time and only overdrive from his Rivera One Hundred Two Twelve amp. Awesomely aggressive, fat tone when playing leads up the neck. Shop for one of these and play with the best.

Squink Out!

Couple of months ago I picked up two set's of ECG24-7 Chromes Flat Wound, 7-String, on a resale at my local music store. 0.11-0.65.

Last night I re-stringed my Jazzmaster with 0.15 - 0.65 (took out the 0.11), it seems to work very well tuned B-B, even C-C after a minor intonation adjustment. I consider this a very cool and versatile option for baritone. I use a Bass VI PS tuned B-B with D'addarios 0.14-0.68 but will consider using the JM in the future.

Thanks heepeejeep! I'm gonna give this a try before doing anything more expensive. But I'll try it on a Strat.

What's the opposite of a baritone? I want a high-A string.

Nashville-tuned?

Mando strat?

IMO.

Aaron wrote:

Soprano maybe? Nashville tuned is all the high octave strings from a 12 string set on a 6 string tuned E-E. I ran across one of the Mando-Strats about a week ago. They sound more like you're playing up around the 12th fret of a guitar.

I know that the mandos are really high, but they feel way too tight. I like the feel/sound better tuned way down. I got a chance to mess with one a while ago and it was pretty cool.

IMO.
