Hi,
Just looking for some opinions here. I have a Boss FRV-1 which has been my primary source of reverb. I am preparing to purchase an EHX Epitom3 - their new pedal which has the Micro POG, the Electric Mistress, and the Holy Grail all in one. I am trading some pedals to soften the $400 blow and am wondering whether or not to trade the FRV-1. It would make space on the board and would contribute to simplifying my rig. I know these two pedals have been discussed ad nauseam, but I'm still torn. If I trade my FRV-1, will the Holy Grail do a decent surf reverb? Or should I keep both pedals on the board - with the understanding that it will cost $ and space.
Thanks for your opinions

I'd play the new pedal and then decide if you can live without the FRV-1.

Noel - that would be the obvious route - but I am thinking about using the FRV-1 as a trade for the new pedal. Comparing them in the store is not a good thing for me as I usually take a little time to get used to a new piece of equipment - especially a peal that I'm probably going to be spending some time dialing in. I was hoping to draw on others' experience.

You can probably sell the FRV-1 here real quick, and replace it later just as quick if you aren't happy with the reverb of the EHX Epitom3. I'm sure a few will wonder why you don't just buy a used reverb tank for the same money. Though if you do, reverb is all you get, and the EHX Epitom3 gives you a lot more than just reverb.
Sounds pretty good. http://www.ehx.com/products/epitome

The holy grail sounds pretty ghastly for surf. Also, the Micro POG just isn't the POG 2. If you are looking for an octave pedal only, you won't be happy. It is a special effect. I love the effect, but it certainly isn't a good sounding or effective octave pedal.
You don't really want the Electric Mistress, do you?
If the pedal was a Deluxe Memory Man, a POG 2, and Big Muff, that would be sweet.

For Surf I'd take the FRV-1 over the Holy Grail. However.... with the Cathedral, they changed the Spring reverb chip/algorithm/whatever so it sounds a little better as a genuine 'splashy' spring reverb like the spring mode of the verbzilla or digiverb.
The Prymaxe demo is good for showcasing what it sounds like. Skip to the 7.40 mark... there's not much but it's an idea of what the spring sounds like. It does sound a little more like the Cathedral spring so might be a worthy replacement, but I'd honestly just try them out side by side.

I really don't think you will be happy with the Holy Grail for surf. The Holy Grail is a really good reverb pedal, but a much different beast, suitable for other styles of music.

First thanks to all for their answers. I'll probably hang on to the frv1 for now. For the record, Jake I like the Micro Pog - it's one of the pedals I'm trading for the Epitom3. The other is a Small Clone which I don't use too often - but I need the Chorus occasionally and I like the idea of getting the flanging along with it. One of the reasons I am getting this is to have a "grab and go" pedal for times when I don't want to carry my PT2. I like EHX pedals in general and the Electric Mistress is fine with me. I am not strictly a surf player - I play eclectic stuff and am trying to add some surf sounds to the mix. So maybe I'm a heretic anyway. And the combo you list wouldn't do much for me - I have a Stereo MMH which I absolutely love and for distortion a whiteface Rat. So I guess our tastes simply are different however I would not present my opinions as objective fact. I use Vox and Blackstar amps as well so I have long since left the reservation of gear purity.

No, our tastes aren't so different. You should see my pedal board, it is gigantic. For surf though, you just wouldn't be happy with a Holy Grail.

Thanks, Jake. Well I'm satisfied that what I don't want to do is trade the Boss pedal. As Noel pointed out, I can sell it later. Actually having two reverb pedals is a good thing - I can leave the Boss set for surf and use the EH pedal for "normal" reverb.
Thanks for your time and answers!
