We've just been killing it at practice the past couple weeks, everybody is dialed in like never before. Only two months into not playing together for 3-4 years. Only 5-6 practices. We played our most complicated song today, perfect on the second time, first time wasn't pretty... I was playing on a National acoustic with a pickup due to a saddle lowering on my Jazzmaster(it needs the set up and new strings it never got after I bought it...)
Anyways, 'That' feeling. Isn't it great? Anybody else care to chime in with anecdotes? I haven't been there in several years, great to be back! I've been in other bands, and other projects but nothing like this band when we are all dialed in.

REALLY glad the 'verb is back together. More songs please! Since you sent me the album I can't stop listening... The writing and (passion, dynamic?) in the music is perfect.
I love the feeling I got playing experimental jazz a while ago, but that's the only band I've been in, and the feel behind surf is so much stronger.

Back to 'that' feeling. It is just effortless, you know everybody in the band is going to be in the same place as you every time. You can move around and get comfortable. No rigid standing in one place all tense just trying to focus on getting your part right. Everything just falls into place.

Some folks would call "that feeling" team work!
Good on ya Jake... cant wait to hear something of it!

Yes, 'that feeling' isn't something to compare to anything else. My absolute most hated thing are those nights when 'that feeling' is just not there, whether it be during practice or a show. We had a show in Birmingham last Friday night where that feeling was certainly not in the room at the time. Thankfully we made up for it the next night.

And everybody in the band knows it... The audience could have loved it but the band is disappointed afterwards. We had a best friend of most of us, who is very honest, come up to us once and went nuts saying how good we were, but we were pissed off at how we played.

It's pretty common for a band to have one or two members have that feeling after practise or a show and the others haven't. Can drive you nuts! It's hard work to get all the members dialed in, but it's definitely worth it. It's great when it finally happens. Good luck and rock on!

jonastronaut, your point is valid. Even the show last weekend that I mentioned is a fine example. I was very down after the performance, as I knew that I personally didn't give my all and that the band was very low on energy. The reaction from at least two of the other members was "I played fine". I wonder if they will ever understand that how you personally played is inconsequential in relation to the overall units performance. That 'band' mentality is something I suppose comes with age and experience.

Some of the best rehearsals and gig performances I have ever had were after we took a break of a couple months. Came back in pretty much cold and nailed it. When you let your songs rest and breath a bit, muscle memory lets your motor skills go on auto pilot which allows your head to get into the music= that sweet spot Jake's talking about.
I have learned not to sweat or even worry about small mistakes because nobody hears them except you. The audience always remembers when the band is giving each other stink eye though.

when we played out last weekend one of our guitar players missed one or two of the fills on 'sultans of swing'. i could see he was pissed. someone in the crowd gave him a twenty because to his ears he had 'nailed it'.

I have noticed that for years, if the final practice before a show goes really awful, we always seem to be on our game for the show. A great practice seems to spell impending doom for old Eddie K and crew. Not too sure why except that over the last 16 years in both the X-Rays and The Surge! the cast of players has changed several times with the exception of me, so it must be ME. I do know that I play better if I am not thinking about what I am doing.................pretty funny, really.
Oh great..............
Now, you put a mic and tape recorder in front of me............doom deluxe.

I don't know if I'll ever experience "that" feeling. But twice at The Summit I saw something of what it must feel like on your face, Eddie. Once during the Astronauts tribute, and again during the Penetrators tribute, you looked up with an expression of sheer joy, almost ecstasy. It must have felt like you looked; full of love and wonderful.

Thanks Noel for such kind words. I actually do get a feeling at times that not only am I being blessed by being able to share all this with so many great people. Additionlly, I often feel compelled to take at least a brief moment to give thanks to those who are unfortunaltely no longer with us but who did so much to help steer me to where I am. That list grows longer with time, but it all started in 1963 when my mom bought my first electric guitar. At that point my clarinet playing was, well, doomed. (used that word a lot today) Good bye Pete Fountain...........Hello Rich Fifield!
Best Reverbs,
