I just got home from the first of two shows the Secret Chiefs rocked at the Bootleg on Beverly near Alvarado in LA.
They powered down two sets, the first as "UR" their surf-rock incarnation and the second as "Forms" (you may correct me here), playing in a more progressive mode.
The Chiefs rocked their first set playing some familiar first-wave surf tunes like "Surf Party" (Waves of Blood) and "The Hearse" (Broken Glass Hearse) which they pressed on their first album in the late 90s. The Chiefs played them aggressively and with much authority as though they were their own tunes among other originals. Trey played a Teisco May Queen for the whole first set as UR.
The second set was more orchestral and textural. Opening with "Exodus" theme featuring Timba Harris on Trumpet and Violin, a lot of hyper-intense originals including John Carpenter's "Halloween" and Camille Saint-Saens's "Danse Macabre"; they played 3 encores, finishing with a John Philips Sousa march (!).
An overwhelming show of musicianship and original vision; they will play another two distinctly different sets on Tuesday night at the same venue. Check them out! Go with open ears and prepare to be amazed!
