I'm relatively new to the surf music scene so I'm sure there's plenty of bands that are new to me and old hat for a lot of you. |

Your ears and eyes aren't deceiving you. They are a great melody driven gothic surf band who don't get the appreciation they deserve comments wise on this forum. Their current album "Church of Reverb" is nothing short of perfection and a very nice piece of good old fashioned Hi-Fi. Another band in the Munster category although not strictly surf - the Moon-Rays first two albums "Ghouls Go West" and "Chills and Thrills" are well worth listening to. Yes they are still active but took a new musical direction a few years ago. |

I will have to seek them out. I am normally clamped right on to anything in the "spook" vein of surf. Back to the OT, Messer Chups are indeed awesome and beloved by pretty much everyone. If there's anyone that doesn't love them, they don't speak it here. The Mystery Men? |

Sorry to go off topic for a bit, but check this album out if you get a chance, to discover some great current surf bands. Back on topic, Messer Chups killed it at Surfer Joe last summer where we played with them. A phenomenal guitarist with just the best tone, and the drummer was hilarious. —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

To be honest, a few years ago, after watching several of their non-surf techno videos I wrote them off as not for me. But I changed my mind after seeing Freddie's Surfer Joe Festival videos. They sounded incredible for a 3 piece and they showed they could really play. And to the OP, don't feel bad by all the know-it-alls. In the future you can use the search engine to dig up old threads on bands you are curious about. Here is how you would use it for Messer Chups: http://surfguitar101.com/search/?q=Messer+Chups&models=forums.topic —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Yeah, some of their stuff is a bit out there...I guess I just don't really think of the techno-type stuff when I think of them, the same way I don't really think of MoAM's more out-there stuff. Not that I deny it exists; just not what makes me such a big fan. +1 to the OP. None of us are born knowing anything. Do a forum search; between everyone, it's unlikely you won't find SOMETHING about what you want to know. Heck, I've been around here for almost as the entire duration and I learned about a band I'd never heard of in this thread. Also, pickup the "Brave New Surf" comp on Double Crown. Great starting point for a lot of bands. —The Mystery Men? |

What Richard and Brian said. Brave New Surf for sure. Double Crown also has The Continental Magazine which comes with a great comp in each issue, and also includes band interviews and lots of short record reviews. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn about lots of bands in a short time. Have lots of fun! —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. Definitely came across as lighthearted, don't sweat it. I'd love to be in the studio to see how Messer Chups creates their sound, and I think I've mentioned it before, but guitar players' crazy chops as shown in their live performances effectively conveys some of the weirdness of their studio cuts. — |

I've listened to this about 8 times today while working in the shop. Anything that you want to listen to that many times has to have something going on. |
