I know there is a thread around here somewhere about the mustang, but i was wondering if anyone has any clips of a clean mustang, i cant seem to find any, and do you think it could handle surf/ska or is its stock pickups too weak? I think i will still be better off with a Jag, but i was just wondering, i love short scale guitars =)

You laugh at me because I'm differnet, i laugh at you becuase you are all the same

mustang is perfect for surf/ska. i know not a lot of people liked the band... but the mighty mighty bosstones used mustangs, and i thought his clean upstrokes sounded killer.

but the trem unit on those does suck. i had no idea until recently.

i think a jag would be awesome for ska and surf together, but the mustang is a pretty smooth little guitar for those sounds as well.

If you tried a Mustang and a Jag together, you'd take the Jag everytime. That being said most people in the audience would never know the difference. I personally like the tremolo system on the Mustang, but I use it with out the stick, just pushing the bridge with the butt of my palm, very intuitive.

I love Mustangs I dig them only in the studio or for band rehearsal but not for live I need my faithful Jaguar but overall it's a dang cool guitar

That is one sweet Musatng! I realy dig that color, i saw a pic of an yellow/orange colored musatng with an orange racing stripe, i fi ever see one for sale ill buy it in an instant. I relay like how the musatng is small and light. I wish stores near me woudl carry them, or someone would tade one in or sumthing, so i could try one.

You can order one through musiciansfriend.com or guitar center for about $699.99
but the only colors they have is Dakota red, Daphne Blue and Olympic White, to bad they don't sell the matching head stock models, you'll see them every now and then on ebay and that's where I got mine for $850+ $100 for S&H to my door from Japan

Thats What iv been eyeing, for $699 they should be great, lol, i think ill buy one off ebay either way, people are selling their '65s on ebay for around $400-500. I went to Guitarcenter hoping to find one, and the sales guy said they had sold their only mustang literaly 20min before i got there Evil owell ill get my chance, ill see if i can find a pic of that mustang it looks so nice.

Whoa. I guess I got mine pretty cheap at $200. It's CIJ (Crafted in Japan? I ain't hip to the lingo), perfect shape.

I like the sound of it, though it's kinda thin compared to my jag or jazzmaster. I think I need to mess with the pickup height as well.

Any recommendations on that?

Thanks,
Good luck!

Reminds me, I found a '69 mustang at a guitar center for around $600. Wen't back a week later to check it out again and probably buy it, but as you already guessed, gone.

diceophonic, do you have roundwound low E, flatwound A and D, and unwound G, B, and E? if that is so, how does that work for you?

The Tremblors on MySpace!

I'm guessing he uses .9s roundwounds.

Kyle, that Mustang is really cool. I kinda wish I still had mine. Maybe I'll pick up a new one at some point.

You got it!!! it's strung this way just for the Mustang it seems to chime better with different gauge strings, it has a good fat but twangy sound.

My other guitars> Jaguars I use roundwounds and Jake you know me Very Happy

I bought a new Mustang last week from the Guitar Center because I liked the look and feel. The sound was just okay, not great... just okay. I took it back to the store and exchanged it because I could not find a bridge adjuster to lower the strings ( these strings were just too high) but no adjuster. Look at the bridge closely.. you will see there are two 'rivets' that hold the base plate to the 'string barrels'.

So I was very happy to get a Classic '60s Stratocaster Player Series in Sonic Blue. Neck, Strings and Bridge were set up very nice. The Sound Is Exactly what I was looking for. I did have to add a hundred bucks to boot with the exchange of my little red Mustang.. but I am very satisified with the '60s Strat.

I've alway liked the Mustang. They have a very surfy, thunky sound. As I remember the bridge uses an allen wrench for adjustment just like a Jag or JM. Not to mention the light weight too. Their down side was the slider switches...el sucko. I almost bought one at the last Nashville Guitar Show anyway but it was the wrong color, Woody and Mitch talked me out of it......ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

I've had a few Mustangs over the years and yeah, they typically have (at least mine did) pretty low output pickups but they are cool guitars in both look and feel. The competition models are my fave - especially the Orange one pictured above. Lake Placid Blue runs a close second (I miss my '69 Crying )

There's a nice looking '64 Mustang in daphne blue on Craigslist right now.
