Line 6 Echo Park does a nice tape delay simulation. Or for $40 get the Behringer clone (Echo Machine)
i dont recommend the behringer clone, im actually trying to sell mine right now, i dont know how close it is to the line 6 but its really hard to get a good mix of the delay signal and the dry signal with it

The Behringer sounds nearly identical to the Echo Park. I have grown to dislike most Line 6 effects, although the DL4 (I think that's the model) appears to be a good delay unit.

I like the vintage Ibanez AD9 (had one but it was stolen. I currently have a Line 6 echo park and MXR carbon copy delay and both are decent. The tape simulation on the Line 6 Echo Park is not too bad and the MXR CC is real nice too. There are tons of delays, determine your budget and go from there. Analog is warmer/darker and Digital tends to be crisper/clearer. I like the analog pedals myself.

the thing i really don't like about the behringer echo machine is that the mix knob is 100% dry signal on the right and %0 dry signal turned to the left, so if you run the mix at around %40 you are only getting %60 of your original signal + delay
something like that, its really problematic
i have a dd-3 right now and so far i love it for not having that issue, its %100 dry signal + what ever delay you want added on top of it, alot more useable although alot more digital sounding but that doesnt bother me

I use the line 6 echo park and love it. Bought it used for $60 from craigslist here in NYC.

I have a BBE "Two-Timer" & it works good & is VERY reliable. It has 2 "channels" so you can set 1 for "Rockabilly Scotty Moore & Setzer" & 2 for "Ethereal Gilmour". Any Shadows or "Hollywood" Tornadoes tune is do-able & the unit is built like a brick house that will last 4-ever ! The only drawback is 3:30 milliseconds max delay time. This will scare some, but as we know, the stage "differs" from the spare bedroom, & this pedal is VERY "beleivable" & strong !
I owned an old gray Echoplex (serial #066) for two years, (lotsa' maitenance-good performance), so I'm probably spoiled. (I shoulda' got the MXR Carbon Copy...same price, more time....oy).

I have an AD9 I bought back in 83 that's still going strong and sounds great for snapback. Bought a TC Electronic Flashback and for tape delay emulation for under $200, hard to be beat. It has other settings, but haven't moved it off tape yet. Gets all warmly and liquid at the end of the delays. Worth trying out.
Very jealous of the Super Fuzz posted at the beginning of the thread. Had one back in the early 80's when I was first starting to play, and then foolishly got rid of it...

FWIW, when I saw Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys open for LSJ last year, there was one only pedal sitting on top of guitarist Ashley Kingman's amp; the small turquoise box of a Rogue Analog Delay.
I couldn't believe he'd do a show using the same inexpensive delay I own. He told me after the show it's the only delay he uses. He said he uses it because it's simple to use and he gets exactly the sound he wants from it.
I gotta say he sounded pretty spectacular which is why I zoomed in on the pedal in the first place.

I dunno. This is the Rogue http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/rogue-analog-delay-guitar-effects-pedal
and here's the Hofner. http://www.hofner-guitars.com/guitar-accessories/effects-pedals/delay-pedal.html

Maybe. But neither publish enough specifications to tell if they're the same box and internals under different paint, or if they just use similar looking boxes.

I like the Behringer VD-400 Vintage Delay for slap back. It sounds more tape like than the old Boss DM-2 and seems like it has a little boost of warmth when you turn it on. Hard to beat the price.
Had a Line 6 DL-4 and an Echo Park. I like the Echo Park more.
Had a Carbon Copy briefly, didn't knock me out.
I use a TC Electronic Nova Repeater on my "regular" pedal board, it does a pretty good job, nice to have the modulation control.
I also have a EP-3 Tape Echo that I love.
Out of all the echo pedals I've had the Behringer still surprises me the most when I use it, how good it sounds. It doesn't excel at much else besides slapback

Got pulled away from finishing the last post.
The Strymon El Capistan is pretty hard to beat for tape simulation if you have the bread to spend and if you're looking at the higher end of things the Diamond Delays can get weirder, more Memory Man-ish and sound fabulous.

Pedals I own:
- MXR Carbon Copy -> solid and good analog delay. Hard to beat, imho!
- Sitori Sonics Magnetic Repeater -> Better that anything I've heard by now
- Sitori Sonics Tapeworm -> Better than the Magnetic Repeater

I have been going through some delay pedals in an attempt to find exactly what I am looking for. Of course the El Capistan is on my Wish List.
In the studio last month I had the pleasure of using Chad Shivers' Stiff Amplification Repeat Offender pedal. To say that it is mind blowing is an understatement. The pedal features the same input FET as the old Echoplex. This thing sounds unlike any other delay I have used to date and I am sold. I shall be purchasing one very soon.
