What can I add? How can I improve my songwriting and guitar sound? I had a few hours of fun throwing this together. I plan on rerecording everything with real instruments at some point. Only the guitar is real - American Tele into my new fender reverb into Gallien Krueger GK-250 into homemade cabs with EV speakers, same ones zak wylde uses, but 30 years old.

36 views, and still no responses. Is it that bad? Step right up, be the first to break the news. None

IMO.

Not too bad, except you broke a golden rule and used hi hat. Kidding! Has kind of a B-52s vibe, and I love them.

Actually just took out the hat and kick at the beginning! I also turned down the organ and added a real bass part. Brings out much more in the piece. I'm at a loss for inspiration on new guitar parts, though. I tried a 12 string solo played with a brass slide and an ebow, but while it had a cool sound, I couldn't find anything good to play. So I smashed the twelver, burned the ebow, and ate the slide in a fit of rage.

Any tips for muting bass without using the palm?

IMO.

Altar,

I do like what you have there. I am hesitant to critique anyone's work in progress. You envision what you want to do. My reactions may not fit with what you have in mind.

Since you asked, here are my thoughts. You need more lenght. You probably know that. I would take the first part from 0:00 to about 0:40. Then cut into a solo. Then work back to the very start. Go from 0:00 to around 0:29 and then move to about 0:40 throught the end as an out go. I realize that does cut the flow some. But it would be a way to give some length to the piece and still keep its overall feel.

Later,
Norm

It does need more length. I'm just sitting on my bed, playing and hoping I can come up with something good.

Here is an updated version. I didn't change the length or arrangement at all, and I have yet to redo the guitar. I'm hoping that by the time I finish this I'll be good enough at it to record it all in one take, rather than cut and paste.

passed 100 views! Come on, guys, I have lots of recording time tomorrow and I love advice! Any tips, suggestions, hateful blabber, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

quick tip for muting the bass without using your hands, small strip of foam rubber cut about 1/4" thicker than the distance from the body to the strings and place it right at the bridge between the bottom of the strings and the body of the bass or bridge plate. It may effect intonation a bit but that can likely be adjusted. Sound and effect will vary with the density, width and thickness of the foam. experiment. The original P-Bass had a cover over the bridge which had a foam strip of this type stuck between it and the bridge. Realistically you may not want the muted tone all the time. Best to use your hands.

Just for when I'm recording. Thanks for the tip! I'll have to find some foam rubber now. The problem is that the tone of my bass is far too harsh, even with the neck pup and tone way down. It sounds wonderful muted, and while I'm recording, I want it muted. Thanks again!

IMO.

Get flat wound strings to take the harshness out of yer bass
