I think you're being a bit hard on the forum Norm. I don't recall any people saying it's a sin to use a reverb pedal. Maybe people point out that they can't replicate the drip you get from a tank, but that's just trying to create realistic expectations. I think 99% of us realize that 99% of the music listeners out there would have no idea what or where that echoey sound is coming from, nor care.
I personally think a double bass pedal sounds like crap. It's like a guitar playing with .09's and a distortion pedal, or a 5 string bass - you can't help but be a wanker, it almost always brings out the worst in the player.

I'll agree with that! However, double bass pedals have their place. Guys like Dave Lombardo of Slayer can use it artfully. I'm not a metalhead, but I love his work. But NOT in surf. Every style of music has it's intrinsic rules. That's just the way it goes. I don't think I'm being to hard by saying there's a double standard here. Some, I repeat some, want surf to progess but still impose many rules of their own. No sax, no vocals, no fuzz, amd so on, even though that stuff was there in the 60's. And he multiple threads bashing the reverb pedal speak for themselves! Seems like everytime I take a break from posting I'll come back and there's a new one! Carry on!

still it is important to emphasize that the pickguard - screws of the guitar have to be placed counter-clockwise, starting from the one next to the guitar neck in order to make it a proper surf guitar! The Les Paul does not have an appropriate pickguard to fulfill this requirement.
and ... every song that is not in a-minor featuring an I-IV-V candence cannot be surf music!

I'm not sure why people are bringing up gear. The OP had nothing to do with gear. He had a question about the applicability of the hi-hat in surf music. I don't think he was trolling, so please give your thoughts on this question in a kind and thoughtful way, otherwise please don't participate in this thread.

Elections for the Surf Police will be held the first Tuesday of March. If people are going to spout off stupid fucking rules based upon their own taste then we should certainly have a voting process.
Don't like double kick, so this is a no go. I like 5-string bass so it is allowed. I hate pedals, so they aren't allowed. I hate hi-hat, so they are allowed.
I have an interesting suggestion. How about we all shut the fuck up about stupid gear shit and go back to creating music, purchasing music, and supporting original artists? It is just a thought.

The Surfguitar101 Yahoo Group was started in 2001. This website has been called surfguitar101.com since 2004. It became an interactive forum in 2006. I'm not going to change the name now. It clearly states the purpose of this site on the home page, and the about page explains this history and how we dropped the "gear only" aspect of the original Yahoo Group (this happened in probably 2001 or 2002, BTW). It's not ideal but it is what it is.

Really? From who? Sadly most posts seem to be in the gear forum or the buy-sell-trade section. There are large numbers of folks here that only post in the gear forum. I have no idea if they even like surf music.
The interactive version of SG101 (the website) will be 7 years old next week, BTW...

When it's a big part of the drum sound, sure. I think anything can find its place in surf, at least, almost anything. Its a matter of whats suitable, or can be made to be suitable. Someone show a video of a b.c. Rich doing surf and I'll give up.
