Permalink Do Hi-Hats Have A Place In Surf Music?

I play drums and, personally, I say No...anyone else?

Is this a trick question?

Are you joking? I can think of 75 million examples of Hi-Hat use in Surf music. You might as well say the guitar has no place in surf.

sure they do have a place right next to the crash cymbal and the snare...

here comes the WEST SAMOA SURFER LEAGUE

I know that SG101 has been suffering from some lulls in conversation lately, but do we really need another one of these?

If you are serious about it, I would urge anyone interested in this question to read the surf drumming subjective thoughts thread. Many of the best drummers in the genre give their thoughts on the use of the hi hat in surf, along with lots of other things. It's one of the best threads on the forum.

(Short answer, it's not as easy as "yes or no".)

Good call websurfer. That Surf Drumming thread is a goldmine of information.

After all the time I have played the drums I have found that if you know your instrument and understand the music you would know where hats toms and such fit in. Experience will tell you.

You're tellin me. No offense but we need something else exciting to talk about besides same old gear threads and stuff like this. But what to talk about I don't know... Confused

Yes, but. Don't bash away on it like a regular rock song.
Surf is all about the Ride cymbal.
Crash and hi-hat should be used sparingly.

Depends. Thin, washy hats are great for surf. Intros are great spots for hats, and bridges.

Don't use thick, chunky hi hats, though. Those sound blech.

IMO.

Unless you are Dusty Watson. Listen to Jon & Nightriders Earthquake at Surf City, Slacktone's Rell Sunn Aloha and Blast Bolero. The hi hat abides.

Oh I dunno, surf music?

Dusty is amazing. His work with Slacktone is just killer.

IMO.

Brilliant! Wink

How about that? Discussing surf music... A novel idea... I will go further. How about we start discussing some current, new surf music. There is a ton of great music being made these days.

Here Here!
I love the first wave stuff as much as anybody, those old recordings can stop me dead in my tracks, the sound, the feel, BUT.....
Genres should grow and change and creating rigid guidelines such as does Hi Hat belong or how much, in my mind, limits the creative possibilities.
