I just got my Vibroverb Amp out of storage and it still has the settings that I used to record the "Revenge of the Surf Guitar" CD written on tape on the top of the amp. See photo.

Since the Reverb control is off, I'll hazard a guess that you're using an old external reverb tank...:D

yes Mel, I also use an old brown Fender Reverb Unit. Although the amp reverb sounds quite good, the external reverb tank has something special!

If I remember right you were using a 63 Jag on that album, any other pedals or effects other than the external tank?

I mostly used a black '63 Jaguar on that album. I occasionally used a Boss DM2 or DM3 delay pedal, otherwise its guitar into reverb tank into amp.

Is that one of the original Vibroverbs Martin or is it a reissue?

Yes, this is an original 1963 Vibroverb amp.
I did play one of the first reissues and it sounded good.

Wow, at least we now know where one of them is !!
About that album, if I may, I've been wondering what gauge strings you used on that Jag. I'm on 11's at the moment and seem to get a nice "woody" tone in certain areas of the fret board but not in others. Maybe 12's would emphasise that tonal characteristic? I also notice that the harder I dig in the fatter the overall tone is. Do you play lightly or quite firmly? Of course, I do realise and accept the "give him a tennis racket" thing plays a part too!
Cheers

Nigel, On the ROTSG album the black Jaguar was strung with 10 - 46 gauge. I wouldn't normally use this lighter gauge string but it worked for that guitar & amp combination at that time and also the sound I was going for.
My prefered string gauge on most of my guitars is 11 - 49. However, I do have some guitars set up with flatwound strings that I use once in a while. I use D'Addario strings and have done for years.
I play the strings firmly and when I play an electric guitar unplugged it projects.
