Cool, now Ivan was quick about it, so how about you guys get the gear porn thing going on next practice, before this thread dies.

I have too many expensive hobbies, can't even start to look for my dream gear.

Ran

The Scimitars

Ivan... a Vox ! Here I was thinking I was the only guy on here that had one. I've been using a early 70's AC30 for about 8 years for my 60's rock and blues stuff, how do you like it for surf?

He's probably using it for Shadows stuff, not for surf.

Ran

The Scimitars

Ivan, I've been R-E-A-L tempted to get back there for that
Madeira/Volcanos/Cocktail Preachers show. Leapin' Lizards!!!
What a line-up!

I'm on the receiving end of Ivan's Showman and it is the voice of God!

I'm playing through a '67 Blackface Dual Showman and my recently acquired '66 Dual Showman cab with proper JBL D140's

I have a Fullerton-era '62 RI Precision (sunburst) and two '62 RI Jazz basses (oly white and LBP).

I have large amounts of non-surf basses and gear, including a large vintage Music Man collection. Here is a picture of about half of my Stingrays, Sabres and Cutlasses:

Hi Dug; Ran is only partially correct - though of course I use the AC30 for the Shadows stuff, I did use it for surf a fair amount, too. When the Madeira first got going, the only Fender amp I had was the Blues Deluxe, and so the AC30 was my main surf amp. I used it for the first four or five Madeira shows. I was actually excited about using it, as I really love the sound of an AC30. Put the reverb unit before it, and it's a great sound, though of course not the completely traditional one. The problem was that as loud as the AC30 is, it just isn't loud enough to cut through when the Madeira gets really going. I couldn't turn it up past 5 or at most 6, because it would start overdriving too much. So, I eventually got the Dual Professional, which is VERY loud. When recording our CD last summer, I used both amps simultaneously. The Dual Pro provided the main meat of my tone, but the AC30 was a nice supplement, providing a lot of midrange warmth. I know Dave Wronski also uses an AC30 when recording (along with some 3 or 4 other amps). Finally, this whole thing was just a repeat of the same experience I had with the Cossacks - when the band first started, I had an (not very good) AC30, and used it for our live shows for several months. But trying to get the amp loud enough and clean enough would start to seriously overheat it and it kept breaking down on me, which was very frustrating. After several months of that, I came across a Fender Vibrasonic Custom, a nice clean, 100W, 1x15" amp and that became my main amp for the Cossacks. I still used the AC30 as the second amp for recording, just as I do now. I do love, love those amps. Amazing tone. I think there are a handful of surf (or surfy) bands in Europe that use AC30s for surf. I believe Langhorns do, Laika & the Cosmonauts (more recently anyway), some others that I can't think of now. So, I'd say, put a reverb unit before that AC30, and if you don't have to play it too loud, it'll be a cool surf amp!

Do it, Bob! Both amazing bands, and unlikely to be visiting the West Coast any time soon. Especially the Volcanos, who have a very laid-back attitude about these things. Smile (Though I could actually see the Preachers making a trek out there eventually...) Anyway, it's gonna be a kick-ass show, and you can probably find a ticket for $200-$250....

My current set-up is:

-Yamaha SGV-300 guitar

image

-Univox Super-Fuzz pedal on some songs
-77 Fender Quad Reverb

I prefer the darker, swampier sound of the amp's verb to the metallic drip of the outboards, at least for the trashy, loud sound I go for.

I have a Earth Sound Research G2000 head as well, and it makes for an excellent surf head. It is basicly an early 70s point to point wired copy of a Showman Reverb in a cool Kustom style Tuck n roll vinyl cab. The 'verb sounds like it has a bit more dwell than a stock fender amp too.

this must be the coolest thread ever! also very cool is that I've figured out this flickr thing, and am about to bother you with it, haha. Ferenc, Ivan - I'm speechless .... that's not porn, that's erotic art!

... this is what porn looks like ... in the 1970's german variety ... the filth ... the sleeze ... the grain of the picture (sorry, bad digicam) ... the fat guys with sideburns and the overweight, undertanned, unshaven actresses Wink ... lovingly called 'my collection':

I would have taken it al outside for a nice pic, except for that at the moment it is all in my study on the third floor of our steep-staired 1930's house and I've got a crap camera anyway.

interesting things are a 70's L5 copy supposedly from the ibanez factory (hearsay), an early sixties Egmon electric (1" plywood - a Dutch guitar brand that sold a lot in the sixties. cheapos for starters) ... a cosmoverb and weber kit reverb tanks ... soulbender and verbafuzz fuzzes.... SF bassman export, 2x12 cab (jensen neo) and 1x15 cab (D140F) ... and a curly chord...

not represented are a brandless Spanish accoustic (in the living room) a dito western accoustic (residing in france) a bitch boy robi-guitar (project in pieces) a 1x15 JBL loaded cab (cab in storage, you can actually see part of the JBL on the far right) and a twin/showman project clone (in pieces on the bench, severe hum)

here's a pic of the guitar i use most ..... people who've toured with Gert might recognize a cutout of a "surfing airlines" sticker. Cool the black thingy is random junk taped to the body - the photo is from a recorrding session, my trem arm squeecked (sp) and i lubricated it, but that changed the return-point and i never knew where the damn thing was when i went for it, so that was to hold it in place. the switch is rewired, down position=mid pup.

image

and here's a cool frog-view shot of my amps set up .... that's me standing on the cab trying to stick some damping to a vibrating garage door (talk about plate echo, phew) also note the table-soccer on the left. and the out of perspective giant reverb tank ...

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Man, this thing also sounds GOOD!! The newly-acquired cab made a huge difference in sound. Like somebody lifted the blanket of the amp...

Isn't this absolutely nuts?? It's his kids' college money in those basses! (Let's not forget these bases were probably also handled by Leo!)

Good to see you here again, Todd!

Hey, I did a tour a few years back with Gert, playing bass in a garage/punk band called the Hard Feelings. Gert rocks, I loved that little house in Belgium.

yes, surf trem and pulsar, we discussed it in another thread. it's only the fuzzes I care about though, the rest are common toys.

thanks. I like to think it's somewhere between a poor man's GAS and a fancy junkyard, but eitherway, tons of fun yeah. that complete studio set up cost less than what one day recording at a semi pro studio would be. the results are obviously way not as good, but from our 'bottom of the foodchain' perspective, it's the road that counts, not the destination. very zen, no? I'm finally getting a decent set of gear together so I'm going to throw my list into the mix.

Guitars:

AV Jazzmaster (sunburst) - Just bought, waiting for it to arrive.
AV Jaguar (inca silver)- assembled by DW on the Fender tag
Jap Jagmaster (surf green) - modified with SD Antiquity 2 JM pups
'65 Mustang (blue) - love that style of tremolo, no bar - use your palm
'79 Strat (25'th ann.silver/green) - "the boat anchor" heavier than an LP
Ibanez "J" bass - does the job

Amps:

'66 BF Pro Reverb - 2nd channel pro "hot rodded", sounds like a marshall
'66 BF Dual Showman - I built the 15" tone ring cab with Jensen Neo

Other:

'64 BF reverb
Reissue reverb unit - tweed
EH Holy Grail
Guyatone Para EQ
Ashbass Fuzzbrite
Sansamp Bass Driver DI - awesome, thanks Jon, LBOP.net
Voce organ module
Alesis SR16 fake drums
Fake beard Wink

Home-made A/B switch. As rhythm guitarist in Meshugga Beach Party, I find myself constantly switching from light to heavy drip on the reverb. So I built a foot switch that can switch between the on-board reverb on my Pro and the out-board unit. For my Showman, I switch between the Holy Grail and the out-board. It also has a seperate foot switch for the vibrato circuit. Now my hands are free to adjust my hat and beard.

Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF

Am I the only one who noticed that Bill and JAcob sent in pretty much the same pic ... two jags, reverb tank, fender tube amp, and the same kind of red-motiv-carpet. Cool the difference is of course in the extra pair of 6L6's Jacob has....

I'd love to know what kind of speakers you (and anyone else) use .... have some thoughts about it, but i want to keep this thread technotalk free. I DO want to know about the speakers, still, esp from the 2 v4 6L6 players.
