Great band! Really surprised they didn't draft in a bass player for that Letterman appearance - do they use pre-recorded bass, or did the bassist for Letterman's band play the bass part off camera?
You never know what one tour to the next will bring with this band. I have seen them perform as a full band. I have seen them perform as a two-piece with Sune on Guitar and Sharin on Bass. I have seen both on guitar. It is always interesting to see which direction they will take.

Took a listen to Observator on Spotify during lunch today. Wow, that transported me right back to '92-'93! Jesus & Mary Chain, Slowdive, Ride - all the good shoegazing stuff. I felt more than a little tinge of nostalgia listening to it. I like it a lot, especially Sinking With the Sun and She Owns the Streets, but then, I think I was predisposed with all my shoegazing history. (Can't say I hear any surf influence on this album - maybe their earlier stuff?) I think I might have to pick up this album, though.

Yes, Ivan, there isn't much surf or garage influence on the new album. You really have to visit their entire catalog. The shoegaze/Jesus and Mary Chain influence runs throughout, but there is a heavy surf influence sporadically within their catalog.

Okay guys. Laugh all you want. I already admitted I lived under a rock musically for 30 years and didn't come out until I found this place, but what is shoegazing music?

Thanks, Ivan. Interesting. I'm glad surf bands haven't been labeled guitargazers for the oft-noticed propensity of surf guitarists to stare at their guitars while they play. I do. I have to.
IMO I think it's unfortunate (according to the wiki piece if accurate) that music critics of the day disparaged those musicians for not playing working class music. What kind of valid music criticism is that?

Ivan, I suppose saying they are a 'surf influenced' band is accurate. But this really only touches on things. The guitar is heavily dominated by a Jazzmaster run through and outboard reverb unit, this is for sure.
A more accurate description of them would be 'heavily influenced by the work of and around Phil Spector. This is very prominent on their first handful of releases.
They obviously have a heavy shoegaze influence as well. Hell, their first full-length(Chain Gang of Love) was often confused for a new Jesus and Mary Chain album by many upon first passing listen.
Another heavy influence, and one really heard at times from their mid-period on, is the work of Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch on the soundtrack to Twin Peaks.
Anyway, below are a hell of a lot of videos from various eras of their career, and this is really just the tip of the iceburg. There is honestly something in this bands catalog for everyone if they take the time to dive head first into it.

I don't think he's ever used an outboard unit for the Raveonettes. The first two albums definitely don't have any, the third album has more reverb but he has a Spring King and that Boss Reverb pedal. If you hear drip, notice it is firing seemingly randomly, that would be the Boss pedal. And onboard as well.
In and Out of Control onwards has featured Sune going straight into the board, and being ampless but just using certain pedals. The Reverb is Logic's Space Designer module/plug-in. Even live the amps are merely monitors and the stuff you hear in the house is just his pedal board. I found this out several days ago myself, there is a nice interview which I can't find at the moment.

Jake, I have some demos and live recordings that would have been impossible to do without an outboard tank, as the drip is just too massive and natural. I know that Wikipedia claims he uses a Spring King, but I have my doubts as to the accuracy of that page.

I've never seen a photo of them with one. I think we are doubting the capability of a blackface onboard reverb. My Super gets awfully dripped and Princetons and Deluxe Reverbs are better than a bad vintage tank. I would never trust what wikipedia says, I've seen the Spring King on his board that is my basis for that.
I have no idea what they use for tracking. I've read interviews, and I know that they use a lot of DI guitar sounds. There's even a DI on the pedalboard for the FOH to blend in amp sounds and DI sound.
The spring sound on the RV-5 is pretty good. It won't fool a reverb junkie like all of us here, but it will convince the average guitarist/listener.

He used that eventide on the album, both for guitar and vocals. He was pretty excited about that thing, I was looking at one a year or so ago... they are awesome but pricey. I'd really like to get one, but I can't justify that.

Noah, thanks for all the info. I've listened to Observator a few more times, and I really love it! What a great album! I've listened to Raven in the Grave and In And Out of Control a few times, too, and while the former has mostly left me cold so far, the latter I quite like. But I think I like Observator the most of any of them so far - possibly cause it's most authentically shoegazing of all of them.
Didn't Rune used to be in the instro/surf band the Euro Boys/Kare & the Cavemen? Or am I getting something mixed up? I have two of their albums, and their debut album was fantastic, some really great stuff on there.

Ivan, I am not familiar with Sune having any other projects besides Raveonettes, Tremolo Beer Gut, and Psyched Up Janis. But I could have missed something, as I don't claim to be an authority.

Oops, I just checked it out, and it's Sune, not Rune! And he used to be in the Tremolo Beer Gut, not the Euro Boys. I knew there was a surf connection, though....
Yeah, nevermind, Noah, I was confused.
The guy from the Euro Boys/Kare & the Cavemen (a Norwegian, not Danish band) went on to join Turbonegro, another band that has become widely known and have quite a bit of success in the alternative music scene. That was my confusion.

...and Raven in the Grave tends to be an album that people either love or hate. I can't say it is nearly my favorite. But on the right day, in the right mood, I have enjoyed it.

Sorry to revive an old thread, if that is considered bad form.
I don't think I've ever read anywhere that Sune uses or used an outboard tank on any recordings. You would imagine that he at least experimented with them on some tracks, but I've not seen him mention that. I think it's all plug ins and live it's pedals. Spring Kings, RV-5's, etc. And they chain reverb pedals together.
With headphones you can get a good listen at their drip in the beginning of this great song.
