I am of the opinion that most of today's younger music consumers have a shorter attention span than us geezers. Assuming that's the case, I think in my finally getting around to recording some surf I am going to go with the EP format rather than the LP format.
Thoughts on this issue? How many songs do you think should go on an EP?

single - 7" - 2 to 4 songs
EP - 10" - 6 to 8 songs
album - 12" - 10 to 12 songs

I always feel the EP is the better way to introduce a band, expecially when the band is very young. It is a good and short representation. However, this allows a band to put something out while also allowing the growth that usually comes in the first few years of a band to be reseved for the full length later on.

^ I agree with this sentiment, and it's why I asked.

I think a 5-6 song EP is the way to go.
In fact I'd be hard pressed to market my music using the standard 10-12 song format.

When I discover a new band the 4 song e.p. format is a great litmus test to see if I want to dig any deeper and possibly commit myself to any fawning fandom. More than that is a bit of a chore to process and sour material can be a turn off. That being said, when I released my own recordings it was an 18 song compilation, because 6+6+6 = 18.

What is the format?
Vinyl?
EP = Extended Play. Not disc size.
I have done a 7" EP running @33rpm with 3 songs on it.
12" singles are another format.
10" can be any speed, but higher rpms = more HiFi sound.
And what about those download cards???

A 4-track EP is a good place to start, both as a bands first release, and also a good way to check out new bands.
