Been in the market for a new mixer for my almost completed man-cave/recording studio. Looked at a mackie Pr0FX with the USB but latency issues are pushing me toward a straight up DI box with 4 to 8 inputs to go from my existing mixer (Mackie FX 12 which I love for live shows).
Any recommendations would be great and to find out what all you folks are using. looking to spend under $500 if possible but that is negotiable. Minimum 6 inputs is key as I really feel the difference between one or two at a time vs the much more organic feel of the whole band recording simultaneously.

I used two Echo products, an AudioFire 8 and AudioFire 12. Those are 8 and 12 input's respectively. These are designed to be line level inputs and outputs. There's only two "preamp" in's, all the other I/O is line input level.
I used them with my SoundCraft LX7ii DI's and line outs, Radial DI's, X-Amps and they worked great. As a bonus they came with a MIDI port that meets the full MIDI spec, so SYSEX and MMC stuff is supported, unlike a many other audio interfaces with add on MIDI that only work with PC, CC and note messages.
I eventually replaced them with an Apogee Ensemble and an expansion 8 channel digital I/O pre for a total of 20 channels.
The Apogee sounds marginally better but I've had more connection issues with it than I ever did in the years that I used the AudioFires.

I used Echo products in the past (Gina old and new), and I (humbly) second the recommendation for your budget.
Here's the one for you: Layla 3G -
stable (great drivers), 2 reasonable mic/inst pre's and 6 balanced ins, gooder converters. Naturally, can be expanded by S/PDIF or ADAT. Latency-wise it's one of the best in it's category - nothing beats PCI. Set it and go.
