I'm looking for a early type splatterey fuzz ala the maestro but I don't want to spend over $200 for it... Any recommendations ? The one ton bee is the best I can find so far.

Haven't tried it yet but the Ashbass Fuzzbrite (clone of the Mosrite Fuzzrite) sounds pretty cool, a more trebley, buzzsaw fuzz similar to the Maestro.
Here's one on eBay for $90 Ashbass Fuzzbrite

The only fuzz I will ever need. http://www.killerrockandroll.com/deathbyaudio/sounds/fuzzwar/fwcleanthenfull.mp3

Spaghetti western fuzz is another one I found. So far I'm liking these two unless someone knows another...the ashbass fuzzbrite is ok too.

I happen to think Analogman has some good fuzzes (sunface and peppermint fuzz)

Liking that peppermint fuzz. Thanks for the tip.

I love my Ennio Trilogy Good, Bad and Ugly Fuzz Pedal. It sounds as good as it sounds like it sounds.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Lots of great suggestions already but I love this unsung pedal and it's beyond affordable. By using all the controls you can go from regular fuzz to splatty, nasty and octave stuff and it always seems to sound '60's ish, at least to me.

I own one of these, while it's a great pedal (a clone of the Fulltone Ultimate Octave, in turn a near-clone of the old Foxx Tone Machine), it's not really the mid-60s low gain raspy fuzz the OP is asking about, it's a higher gain kind of fuzz that came along in the late '60s/early '70s. The original Maestro Fuzztone and Mosrite Fuzzrite are the archetypical raspy fuzz and The Ashbass Fuzzbrite, Catalinbread Merkin, Nocturne Seltzerado, Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz (overpriced in IMO), and Ennio Trilogy are the closest currently-made pedals out there.

Hmmmmmm......interesting. I guess it's all in how you use it. I use mine at the lowest fuzz setting and by manipulating the knobs am able to get it to sound very much like my Ashbass Fuzzbrite.
I used it for this song which doesn't sound like a high gain, 70's fuzz, at least not to me. I also use it for some Eleki stuff just to add more nasty twang not grit.

The MJM Brit Bender Fuzz (2-knob version). I recently aquired one in a trade. At first I thought it was gonna be useless as it had a really over the top raspy fuzz, but when I back the fuzz off to about 9:00, and lower the guitar's volume knob to about 6-7 it sounds perfect. I gotta mention that it's a center positive pedal though, so either 9v or a seperate power supply is needed. If you like, I can send you a clip later this evening, just PM me an email address.

Hot off the presses from Bob Shade of Hallmark Guitars:

"We are also re-issuing the NU-FUZZ which is being made here in the USA and completely hand wired by Ed Sanner the inventor of both the Mosrite Fuzzrite circuit and the NU-FUZZ. The NU-FUZZ is the same circuit basically but with a tone control which is extremely useful for dialing in the tone which you could not do with the Fuzzrite. This allows you to dial the cream in. The first run of 100 comes with a certificate signed by Ed and myself and they come in 4 candy colors just like the ultra rare originals."

For the kind of fuzz the OP was asking about, I'd also recommend the Merkin. You can get a lot of sounds out of it. Check out the demo on their website, it is pretty cool and gives you a good idea of what it can do. You can probably find one used for around $100 or so if lurk around long enough.

I've been looking at a lot of different fuzzes. I had it narrowed down to the Catalinbread Merkin and the Nocturne Seltzerado. I think I'm going to go with the Nocturne. I think it sounds the best for what I want to do with Rifamos.

Either you surf, or you fight.

Either is a great choice. You can never have too much fuzz, that's why I have two pedalboards, so I don't have to choose. Big Grin

The seltzerado is awesome.

Fuzz is perhaps the most selective of effects, there is no best one except the one ( or ten ) you like best. For me I've got Merkin mania, perhaps it will subside. But I'm hoping not.

I found the Hoof Earthquaker devices to cover just about any fuzz tone.
