Yes folks Man Or Astro-Man? and Los Straitjackets are gonna strut their stuff for all you geekniks. The two biggest surf instro groups of the 90's will be together along with other special guests as well. Here's a link to Deke's blog talking about the whole she-bang http://dekeorama.blogspot.com/2012/11/dekes-10th-and-final-guitar-geek.html

Compared to years past, I'm not impressed with the lineup for either night. Since I'll be down there for Winter Surf Fest, I may end up going.

Bob

Did he say why it is the final one?

Sadly I have know idea as to why this is the final Guitar Geek fest.Deke hasn't alluded as to why this the last one.To anyone claiming that the line-up isn't that impressive clearly hasn't ever witnessed Man Or Astro-Man? in action.Star Crunch will blow your mind!.I just listened to the new Analog Series Vol.2 45 from MOAM? any needless to say the new songs will make their fans drool.Sure I haven't heard much from the other players/bands either but Deke,LSJ,and MOAM? are enough to get most peoples attention I would think.

I think the financial climate over the past few years is a factor. People are not spending money.

It is rare that any band has been able to pick up where they left off, so many years later. The first Analog Series EP was fantastic. I am digging Volume 2 even more. They aren't going to win over any surf fans that didn't like the direction they were traveling around the time of 1000x and Made from Technitium, but those who loved those records will feel right at home.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

Something to keep in mind is that the bands usually play abbreviated sets (even the headliners), and it's a fairly expensive ticket each night. I'm just not that into a lot of the country, swing, and jazz old-timers on the bill, especially since I've seen most of them before. Last year's Saturday show was worth every penny (and then some), but I chose not to go on Friday for the above reasons, and a metal headliner (Paul Gilbert). Deke always gives you a lot of entertainment for your dollar. Whether it is the right entertainment for the individual is the question. I'd love to see Los Straitjackets, and maybe MOAM, although I'm not into their 1000X and Technitim era direction. Most of the other acts, although very talented, are not real appealing to me for the cost. Yet I want to support Deke, and feel guilty when I don't go.

He said on Facebook that he looses big money every year, and that this will be the last one in conjunction with the NAMM show. He mentioned that another contributing factor is the huge loss he takes on the DVD production. He said he may do others, but differnt location/time and def. no dvd's.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Deke's also had some tax problems. He put some of his gear on EBAY earlier this year. I imagine the costs out there in the Peoples Whacky Republic of California don't make putting a festival on any easier, either.
You get what you vore for and that especially means nationally now. Hunker down, folks.. more bumpy ride ahead.

Looks like a great show to me, wish it was here on the East Coast. I doubt it has anything to do with being in Califonia. The folks in Cali seem to put on the best and biggest regarding most anything to do with entertainment.

I think sponsorship is the key to events like that.

+1 Crying

Insect Surfers
The Tikiyaki Orchestra
The Scimitars
Lords Of Atlantis
Fiberglass Jungle - Surf Radio

so who is planning on coming to this,
and the Winter Surf Fest?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I just got my reservations. Geek fest and Surf fest.

FWIW, I think Thom Bresh was in Chiyo & the Crescents. I imagine this will probably emphasize his subsequent country career.

Chiyo & the Crescents Pink Dominos
Chiyo & the Crescents Devil Surf

Thom Bresh Dueling Banjos

Yeah, Thom Bresh was indeed in Chiyo & The Crescents. Incidentally, their famous tune "Pink Dominos" is on the Surf-Age Nuggets box set. I agree with you Tuck--emphasis will probably be on his subsequent country career and the fact that his dad was Merle Travis!

They had an article about it in Vintage Guitar. It's a shame he's giving up on it. Love to see it moved to Atlanta Smile
