Hi Folks! 1st time poster here. I search the net to find this site. I've lurked for a few days now.
I play the Cello...all classical music. I'm in an Orchestra.
In the middle of a rehersal, I would love to break out into a "surf" solo on the cello. Like Lisa Simpson does with her sax.
So. I'm looking for some simple single note cord progressions that have an underlying Surf-rock rythym and feel. The cello is fretless and tuned in 5ths. Most music needs to be written in single notes.. and maybe a few double stops.
Can anyone point me to some simple sheet music to get me started..?
Sincere thanks!

Phil Dirt's current reverb dream includes a cut of Miserlou Twist by a string quartet (with Martyn Jones on drums). Check it out (it's track 18 ). It's pretty sweet.
Cellodude, I don't know where to find surf sheet music. If you end up pointed toward a song that sounds worthy, you might want to contact the band members themselves.

You bet!! Apocolyptica is the source of my inspiration!! I understand that they are very accomplished Classical Cellists.
I really appreciate the "cross over" thinking. For example, I loathe at the thought of playing Pachelbel's Canon because the cellos got hosed with the most boring and basic harmony for a piece that has such a wonderful melody. It's so refreshing to see something like this:

Ah, the Kronos Quartet. Great band. They cover Purple Haze, too.
I once heard a violinist do a great Black Magic Woman at part of a Denver Hispanic theater production called La Carpa Aztlan. I don't know if she was winging it or even if it's a fixed part of the production.
Given the propensity of surf groups to cover classical numbers, it's only fair that the classical repertoire groups should occasionally return the favor.

Welcome CelloDude!!! I'm no expert on where to find
sheet music for surf, but there is a wealth of great surf
tunes that would lend themselves well to what you want
to do. I'll bet Music Dispatch/Hal Leonard has a Dick Dale
book of sheet music. I think most of us here would love
to hear what you come up with. Good luck!

Holy cow! My wife just bought a cello this last sunday at Sam Ash! I never thought to try surf on one. I think Pipeline might just work.
I'll give it a try and see.

Everyone, thank you Kindly for the warm responses!!
I've collected a handful of midi files online that I can study now.
I think Pipeline looks doable in a Duet arangement. It'll probably take a few weeks to work it out....then a few weeks to get enough nerve to post a recording online
Sincerely,
Rob

I found this one called Yakety Axe, from watching a couple of videos linked from the Canon one. Chet Atkins playing.

I bought the "Best of Dick Dale 15 Classics from The King of the Surf Guitar" at my local music store a couple of months ago. This book is produced by Hal Leonard ISBN 0 - 634 - 06468 - 1 with notes, tablature and words by Dick Dale himself. You might try www.halleonard.com for info regarding this book and another one called "How to Play the Surf Guitar by Dick Dale. Happy hunting.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra did a cello version of "Walk Don't Run". Haven't heard in a long time but I remember thinking it was pretty cool. Yep, in fact here is a snippet:

Don't forget Good Vibrations - that the great chugging "DU DU DU DU DU DU DU..." under the theremin isn't a guitar, it's a CELLO.
