Permalink Theremin Recording Session for "The Day the Earth Stood Still"

New Topic

Here's an outake from the recording sessions for the 'The Day the Earth Stood Still" It's hard enough to get one Thereminist playing in tune, let alone two playing harmony!
Played by Dr. Samuel Hoffman (who also plays on "Spellbound" and Captain Beefheart's 'Electricity'), and Paul Shure, who had never played a theremin before! They're both using classic RCA Theremins-- much woodier sounding than Moogs or any other modern day equivilent.

Very interesting! Another example of a break-through score by Bernard Herrmann. There were two other "new" instruments used for that score: electric violin; often mistaken for a theremin, and electric bass.

I can't get the youtube link to work for me. It could be the computer I'm using too? I'll try again when I get home as I was looking forward to this.

Yessss!!! Very, very cool! Thanks for sharing, Psycho! One of the cooolest CD box sets compiles Hoffman's playing on some of the earliest recorded "Exotica" tracks, originally released as a series of 78s--"Music Out of the Moon," "Perfume Set to Music" and "Music for Peace of Mind." Incidentally, these were some of the very first "Cheesecake" album covers, featuring seductive, scantily clad women and also featured arrangements by none other than one of Exotica's "big three," Les Baxter. Clara Rockmore will always remain THEE master, though!

Hoffman got the gig for "Spellbound" because Clara Rockmore refused to do it - she didn't consider it real music, but much later on she admitted it tured out pretty good.

It's also my understanding that Brian Wilson wanted Dr. Hoffman to play on Good Vibrations because of his work with Beefheart, but Samuel Hoffman passed away a few months before "Good Vibrations" was recorded, so they opted to use Paul Tanner and his "Tannerin" or 'electro theremin' as it was erroneously known. The Tannerin was little more than a gerry-rigged sine wave generator -- completely different to a Theremin, although few seem to notice the difference. Tanner (a Trombonist) came up with it after he had observed Hoffman struggling to find a note on the Theremin during a recording session years earlier.

I wish I could tell wheter 'woodier' was a joke.
