One of our setlists is going to consist of 12-16 songs. 35-45 minutes. Lots of variables to consider when making a setlist. Location, time of day, audience make up, what time of band you are, what you want to accomplish with the audience, how you want to be perceived.
The type of gigs we took, we never tried to take a gig in which we'd be background music. None of this multiple-set stuff that a lot of surf bands do. One set, legitimate location. Not a corner of a restaurant or a sidewalk outside.
Keep it simple, keep it short, grab their attention, and leave them with an impression that makes them want more.
We share this policy as well. All having backgrounds in punk and indi music, we have always played bills that include 2 or more bands anyway. Frankly, I feel we put a lot of energy out, but anything over 45 minutes would probably suffer from lulls.

I really like the Daytona's track 'Go!'. I've got it on a compilation. It's got a nice sound quality to it I think. Did you ever use to play that one live?
Yes, we did play it live quite often, at least during the first years. I agree it's a really good song (written by our band leader Lars and organ player Björn) although I'm not a fan of the sound production. To me it sounds pretty dull and I think our follow-up album Quarter Mile was an improvement in getting a more exciting sound.
I like that it's mono. I see what you mean about the dullness but I think the mudiness of it is actually quite endearing
I thought it was stereo?! At least the album version is but maybe they altered it for the Beyond The Beach comp? Anyway, I personally think that a mono mix is almost always to be prefered when it comes to surf music. Everything we do today is mono.

Just listened to it, It's hard to tell, but I guess it is stereo after all.
Anyway, don't want to hi-jack this thread so...

Ours depends on the night and how long we need to do. We pretty much max out at about 1.25 hours. Some covers we don't do all the time just because they were some of the first covers we did and we like to keep it fresh.
Orig
I don't think it's loaded kid
Zombie Girls (Don't say No.)
Roses are Red, Violence is due
Rob the Ripper
You've Got Red On You
Barebacking
Punchdrunk
Lobo
The Gun Show
26 Alpha 20
Work the Pipe.
Put Some Stank on it.
The covers are a pretty standard list for this forum with a few exceptions. I wouldn't say they're done to fill time exactly because we do enjoy playing them, but sometimes some covers were thrown in at the last minute because we did need to fill out more time.
Rumble
Surf Rider
Intoxica (Which can/has turned into What'd I say.)
Surfin Drums (Can help take up time if we jam it out and we do.)
Nitrus
The Wedge
Blood and Thunder
War Ensemble (Yes...we surf out Slayer and Mastodon. My drummer is a metal drummer and actually can play that way. I figure why fight it?)

Interesting. We've also had a Slayer cover in our set for a while. Seems that Slayer can be 'surfed' easily. Oh, it was 'South of heaven' with 'Miserlou' in the middle instead of the solo.

Yeah South of Heaven is perfect to surf out. Even if you just put a nod of the main riff into a song w/ heavy Fender Reverb.

We're the Abominable Showmen. I don't have any audio of the Mastodon cover since we literally just started playing it. But I do have an video of the Slayer cover from when we started doing it. It's really not too imaginative. It's the same song with a few parts taken out for the sake of making it easier to play (Playing all of the Slayer leads with a surf tone doesn't exactly work.)
Abominable Showmen-Slayer cover
But it's those songs that you've already heard with surf guitar and no vocals. You can't play them everywhere but it's pretty redeeming to have the heckler in the audience that always goes "Slaaayyyyyyerrrr!!!" and then you nod and go into it. When we play with heavier sounding bands, it tends to go over well. There are sometimes a lot of looks on peoples faces like, "Well...I didn't see that coming."
