Permalink Mosrite Ventures model on American Restoration, History Channel, Wednesday night

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

While watching the History Channel earlier today, I saw a preview of Wednesday night's episode of a show by name of American Restoration, and it'll be at least partially about a vintage Mosrite Ventures Model. (I don't watch this show, so I have no idea how good it is.) Wednesday, December 5th, 9 pm EST. I plan on tuning in, what the heck, could be interesting....

Ivan,
Thnaks for the heads-ups. A.R. is one of my favorite shows. The host and owner - by coincidence - is Rick (not Dick) Dale. He is a whiz at restoring what most would call junk. Top notch work.
Having restored several Mosrites over the years, I'll get to compare notes.. maybe I can learn something new.
He should have an easier time of it than I had. More Mosrite parts are available now than as rececent as 5 years ago.

thanks again, Ivan

Ah, I wish I could see it. If it ever appears on youtube, please share a link:-)

Thanks for the heads up Ivan. That will be interesting.
I hope the guitar is not in working condition. Doesn't restoring a vintage guitar in working condition just decrease the value?

I'll probably watch it tomorrow when it goes on up in Ixfinity on-demand

I think they had the Ed Roman guys refinish it. You couldn't possibly refinish a guitar in a couple of days, especially if the guy had no idea how to do it, and it was done in laquer, it would take at least a month. Also, they didn't show any of the process like they do for everything else they restore on that show. Thank heavens they didn't "customize" it

My favorite moment was when the Ed Roman guys were "educating" them about The Ventures, and just as they uttered that "The Ventures played Mosrites exclusively," an early press photo of them with Fenders was shown! Classic!

History channel puts episodes online. The episode is Call the Count.

I watched it, and had to laugh. - I've had the "pleasure" of talking to the Ed Roman guy. He was nice as could be on the show, but that wasn't my experience. Total jerk...

The guitar looked good when it was finished. I don't think Rick did it.

Just watched it...now I'm sad...

I didn't see the show, but Ed Roman passed away in December 2011. Was he on it?

I don't think so. They worked for Ed Roman guitars, but the main guy was named....Scott...I think...if I'm wrong someone here will correct me Big Razz

The whole thing was pretty disappointing.... Neutral

Yeah, it was a bit of a let down.
I still think the guitar was probably worth more before they restored it.

I know they are trying to go with local (Vegas) instrument appraisers on these shows, but I am usually underwhelmed by their knowledge. Pawn Stars (which AR was spun off from) uses a guy from Cowtown guitars for on air guitar appraisals and history. He's o.k. but I thought he kind of blew it on the Ricky Frypan lap steel. He's better on the rock history, but still doesn't strike me as authoritative as the experts they bring in on other items.

Well.. I learned nothing from the episode and, frankly, I think I've done better work. Rick Dale seems to know his limitations so I have to think for the job done, (BTW the string action was still a bit high IMHO) it looks like the late Eddy Roman and his bandits did the job. That nitro job wasn't over a few days, either. We all have our thing and our limitations..
On the plus side
The correct trem arm was added, the body holes and dings filled. And it looks like it may have gotten a fret job and original frets are not to be had. (I've used mandolin fret wire)
This guitar is what I call a "mixed breed" - truss rod at base of neck but M knobs instead of smooth knobs. Moseley instead of Vibramute tailpiece. I have to say this a transitional model (if all correct) from late 1965 to early 1966.
The custom strap was a nice thought but a little too "Vegas razzle-dazzle" for my tastes - give me plain black.

Hope the kid enjoys it.

Agreed. The only impression I was left with was it's nice to be liked by Rick Dale's wife. (And I wonder what she orignally paid for the beater.)

CUTBACK

She might have scored it for $1500-$2000 and figure the restoration was at least another $1K or so. I doubt if R.D. actually did it.. there wasn't any scenes of the guitar apart for cleaning or paint, was there?
The kid is in for some hassle getting a case for it. An original brown alligator case is around $300.00 today - if you can find one. The typical stratocaster/telecaster Guitar Center case won't fit. Others cases might have "Ibanez" or "Kramer" stamped on them.
Biggest hassle I've had in restoring Mosrites - getting an original or plain black case that fits.

Shoulda left it the heck alone. I'd expect the refin to drop the value. But I'm not a Mosrite expert. Anybody know for sure?
