Brian, maybe you can tell me whats up with me (and a few other members) being 'demoted' to Gremmie again. i was only a Reverb Enthusiast for a couple of days, and didnt get to taste its full glory...hah. its not that big of a deal, but im sure quite a few other people would like to know too. thanks!
anyways, i apologize if this isnt in the right place, i just thought it might go better in here than the suggestion box.

I had to adjust the ranks for inflation. Everyone got adjusted, no one was singled out.

why do i only have 2 stars instead of a gremmie's normal 1? why are there people with 1 star that are hodads? i didnt figure i was singled out, but i was just confused. at least now i know its something that was supposed to happen and not just a glitch of some sort.
haha, sorry for making such a big deal about it.

Hodads were actually the greaser rockabilly kids who didn't like the surfers. Gremmies were the troublesome kids who hung out at the beach. Some of them wanted to be surfers but always got in the way...See "Death of a Gremmie". I figured going from Hodad to Gremmie was a step in the right direction.
Seriously though, I accidently switched the ranks and now I'm just making stuff up.

Maybe this is actually a shallow end thread, I dunno. I ran into this sort of terminology in the early 60s in Detroit, where the two main "dress code cliques" (from a 7th grade perspective) were called "greasers" and "frats." Nobody suggested music had anything to do with it, but maybe I was too young and too late to hear that.
About the same time in Denver it appears they were called "greasers" and "soshes." I believe the latter must have been short for "society" + something, not "socialist"! Sosh rhymes with gauche. Again, nobody made a musical connection. Just offered to beat me up for being a sosh. Maybe it was the light blue plaid shirt. Actually, the guy was wrong; I was a card carrying nerd then and I still am.
I figure "rocker" and "mod" are somewhat parallel in early 60s England. As in the movie Quadrophenia. Definitely both a dress code and a musical connection there.
I guess in So Cal it was "hodad" and "surfer." But where does "hodad" come from? And what was the dress code?

Surfer slang
Noun
hodad or ho-dad (plural hodads or ho-dads)
(surfer slang) One of those guys who comes down to the beach and has a surfboard, but never surfs.
A poser A wanna-be
"The Ratz" Von-zipper gang

My understanding of the lingo (based in part on a Paul Johnson explanation he posted on Cowabunga years ago):
Hodad: Leather jacket wearing guy stereotypically into cars and rockabilly. If he is at the beach it is just to pick up girls. He does not surf.
Gremmie: Troublesome kid at the beach who typically gets in the way of the surfers. May or may not want to surf.
Kyle, if you donate money to the site I change your rank to Contributor. For people that have given what I perceive as way too much money I may mark them in other special ways. These are the big gold star people.
People that help me moderate the forums are called Lifeguards.
For everyone else, your rank is based on post count on a completely arbitrary and ridiculous system I pulled out of my butt. Don't read anything into it more than that. I can look up the actual names and numbers later if you are really interested.
