Permalink Suggestions for Surf Covers

New Topic

Hi everyone, new member here. I've recently put together an instrumental band and we're doing surf and blues instrumentals. Can you suggest some surf instrumentals that would be good for bar/pub gigs? I have lots of Ventures material, as well as the Atlantics, Dick Dale, Bambi Molesters, Los Tiki Phantoms, and a few others at home but I'd love some more bands to check out. Modern or traditional doesn't matter, as long as it's got a good vibe to it. Thanks!

Walk Don't Run
Mr. Moto
Penetration
Pipeline
The list goes on and on, but I've found that those good for starting out.

Either you surf, or you fight.

Who's to say what songs you respond to as a guitarist. Just listen to as much as you can and pick the ones you like. For (mostly) modern stuff check out our free podcasts.

Thanks Danny, I've got the podcasts now and a few pieces have caught my attention. Right now I'm trying to find songs that will get toes tapping at the bars/pubs we'll be playing at. I'd like to play the standards as well as whatever has a good flow and overall vibe so people will enjoy it as much as I do.

BTW, a vid of MBP's Hava Nagila was the inspiration for me playing it at the bass player from my last band's wedding reception. They got a kick out of it, so thanks! Then again, they're divorced now... Smile

Stick to songs that aren't too fast, and have straightforward drumbeats that don't change too much within the song. Los Straitjackets is a great source for that kind of stuff.

Thanks for the tip. I do like their stuff, and their cover of Sleepwalk is great. It's in the set already. Smile
