Wow, this looks like a really great collection! Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Klas. I have at least half the tracks already (and they're all uniformlly great ones), but it's the rest that are very intriguing. I'll have to pick this up.

BTW, I don't know if you've heard, but Big Jim Sullivan, the guitarist for the Krew Kats, passed away just a few weeks ago. The Krew Kats have a few tracks on this comp, and featured Brian Bennet and Licorice Locking, who went on to replace Jet Harris and Tony Meehan in the Shadows. Big Jim went on to become a legendary session guitarist. R.I.P. Jim Sullivan

It's a very solid comp and I particularly liked the four totally crazy tracks by the Ted Taylor Four of the stuff I didn't already have.

Yeah, I heard about the passing of Big Jim Sullivan. R.I.P.

Spooky coincidence. I woke up monday morning with Krew Kats "Jack's Good" ringing in my head. I haven't played the track for a year so after a cuppa tea i spun it three times in a row thinking wow! how on earth did the guitar player think that one up! I had no idea who Jim Sullivan was until Ivan mentioned him and i looked up his history.

Klas, the tracks that you haven't heard before, are they the usual Shadows knock offs, any originality?

I would say there are quite a few tracks included that feature originality and doesn't sound like the Shadows.

We cover two Ted Taylor songs:
"Haunted House" aka "Haunted Pad" on our last album here's a sample:
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Coffin+Daggers/_/Haunted+Pad?noredirect=1
and "Cats Eyes" which will be on an upcoming 7"
"Cats Eyes" was also done by Ray Columbus and the Invaders (who's version we modeled ours on) and by the Mad 3 (from Japan)
Great tunes
Ted Taylor was the 'go to' clavioline player in England in the early sixties.
We tried in vain to find a working clavioline for our versions, but only turned up a Hammond Solovox (very similar) which was way too noisy for recording. In the end our trusty old Vox through a Leslie speaker had to do the job instead.

Victor, I really love your version of Cats Eyes!! That's just brilliant. I remember being completely floored by it when I saw you play it live. Really glad to hear you'll be releasing it. And Haunted Pad is great, too!

Thanks! I first heard Cats Eyes on a compilation called Madness Invasion that features a lot of weird obscure stuff

Very cool! The Vox sounds great and there's nothing wrong with giving the song a bit of your own sound by not just copying the Clavioline on the original.

Thanks. At first we tried to record the Vox with the tape at half speed so it would play back an octave higher, but it sounded wrong.
Here's the Ray Columvus and the Invaders version of Cat's Eyes:

Jack sent me the two Mariners CD's a few weeks ago. I have only managed to find time to listen to the most recent, but it is good stuff. I really like the cover of 'Vacation' by the Go-Go's.

Commence setting hopes and expectations low ...

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I think that was the first Sharp Five album I got. I'm not a huge fan of the title song but most part of the album is really good although it's all covers. Great eleki takes on the "Batman Theme", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and "Comin' Home Baby" to name just a few.

All I've heard from it is the title track, which I'd share your assessment of. That version of "Comin' Home Baby" is pretty damn cool, though.

I have that CD. I thought Evan was in a new surf band, but I haven't heard anymore on that recently? He sure is a great guitar player.

A heads-up for anyone here into British early 60's instro groups besides just the Shadows. At first glance I thought I already had too much on it but when studying the tracklist a bit closer, it turned out that I only had about half of the tracks previously. Lots of great stuff on it for any euro-instro fans.

Klas, you called it - it's just phenomenal! I've been listening to it over the past week or so, but it's really hitting me in the right way at the moment. Absolutely amazing. Creativity off the charts! I also LOVE the four Ted Taylor Four tracks, of which I only had two before. What a wacked-out band!! Just brilliant! So great to have this comp, I cannot recommend it highly enough to all SG101ers!
