True story. I thought the FRV-1 was pretty awesome. Until I got my tank. Then I still thought it was pretty alright until I actually a/b'd it that day with Jonpaul. The difference was so incredible, that I forever became an elitist tank-or-gtfo snob. Seriously, I'm now like some hipster d-bag that looks down my nose upon pedal using scum! (Ok, maybe not that far... but I am definitely a tank snob now, lol) The FRV-1 is harsh, way too bright, and way too thin. Heck, after the tank a/b me and Jonpaul a/b'd the FRV-1 with the onboard digital fx reverb on my Fender Super Champ XD, and the cheap amp effect sounded much better than the FRV-1. But... I have to admit, I once saw John Blair use an FRV-1 at an Eliminators gig in Anaheim. At loud volumes and properly adjusted, it did sound pretty cool. But John Blair could probably make any pedal sound good Now if only I could get more douchy hipster elitist about my practicing habits, I might actually sound better when I play regardless of my reverb equipment... |

The pics are awesome... Sticking with the original post.. I guess if you can afford a spring tank, the Fender or IMO Billy Zoom's Big Kahuna are the way to go. If you can't afford it, or feel the smaller compact pedal is the way to go, the BOSS mimics the Fender tank reasonably well -I def prefer it over other available reverb pedals. |

Let me put a rest to this once and for all (BWAHAHAHA!). The FRV1 is, as of now, the best pedal for simulating a tank. If you can't afford a tank, don't have the space, or just don't have the need for the authentic drip, it's a great pedal. That being said, there is nothing that will get a true tube reverb drip like a tank. It just isn't possible and probably never will be. Whew. Now we can finally end this thread! —Shawn Martin |

Stringer, don't worry about it. As I explained, it's actually easy to miss finding this pedal in a search, and you did try. Anyone who searches for "FRV-1" will come up empty-handed. And, many new members immediately or eventually ask for the most cost-effective reverb solution. I did. And, if they've already heard of the FRV-1, they'll ask about it by name. I did. The difficulty finding it in a search almost guarantees it. Besides, you wouldn't have known, but you were like the third new member in a couple of weeks to ask about it, so there's that too. Other than this one sore topic (and I guess endlessly circular gear debates in general) everyone here really is friendly and helpful, encouraging and generous with their knowledge and experience. Stick around, and in a couple of years you'll be explaining to some newbie why asking about that pedal caused an unexpected outburst of ill-humor. So, welcome aboard! —This is Noel. Brian, if you're reading this, I think the forum needs the addition of a smiley like this one Or perhaps more like this Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers. Last edited: Oct 28, 2012 08:28:06 |

Of course, maybe the search engine could be hard-coded so that "FRV-!" finds topics and posts instead of this. Search in: Results for "FRV-1" page 1 of 1 No results found for FRV-1. —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. |

I thing the bottom line is if you are a touring musician who needs reverb this is a tool you can use so you don't have haul a tank around on the road and risk breaking something. Adjusted properly, you can get a nice effect. A vintage tank or properly reworked reissue tank is better but that's not in everyone's budget. Last edited: Oct 28, 2012 11:06:37 |

I could also do one with the, ahem, Squier "surf" Strat (notice inverted commas) but I'm afraid at such a low definition you won't be able to tell the pickups are lipsticks... And then someday a newcomer will ask why there is a smiley bashing a surf green strat, and someone will correct them, and it'll be all over again Old punks never die...
