Just a quick response and please note that I haven't taken the time to read all the posts pro's and cons. IP said that Rich Fifield only used Jazzmasters, not so. Leo actually sent them an assortment of Fine Fender Instruments in "payment" for the RCA Album cover (ad) "Everythind is A-OK". As such they noodled around with all kinds of things. When they were performing in Atlanta, Rich played a Mustang as he liked the short scale. He was also fooling around with a Gibson 335. But ......I give in... These days Rich plays a Strat.

I found this site because of my love and flair for 'kooky guitars' (as my bandmates usually refer to them as). I'm quickly falling in love with surf music!

Here's one from my collection that I think makes a strong contender for a GREAT surf guitar. It's the Italia Modena, from Italia Guitars (http://www.italiaguitar.com) The tremelo on this Trev Wilkinson designed guitar kicks total heinie. And it's a total tone machine, very very versatile.

I have two Italia guitars and love them (other one is a blue metalflake Maranello)

The Wilkinson hardware and pickups are first rate! I've since ordered Wilkies off of Da Bay and put them in several of my other geets.

Noggles
I've just started listening to and recording surf. I've already had one of these, a Rickenbacker 650, and it turns out it works great for recording & playing surf. Not that I have any experience with it, but I think it sounds alright. Plus I just personally think it's the best looking guitar ever made.

Rickenbackers are great I dig the lennon models and the McCartney 4001 bass.

Get heavier strings on your Mosrites and Jag if you want it to play more like a Strat.

i've got a tex-mex strat and two mosrites. strat always gets played for surf. the 25.5 scale is just so much more snappy/edgy than the mosrites.

Do you really think there's that much difference in the 25.5 of a Strat and a 24.75 scale on a Mosrite? I could never tell the difference of the feel, myself. I always thought it was the perfect go-between of the 24 inch of a jag and the 25.5 of a Strat or JM

My wife has put up with my music madness since 1964. As a matter of fact, our first date was to my first band gig. Later as we were loading luggage into our Mustang after our wedding, heading off to our Honeymoon in 1968. Carol noticed my Les Paul in the trunk and asked me what I planned to do with "that". I told her that I planned to play it. I did then and I have for the last 39 years. Like I said, a day rarely passes that I haven't noodled around on at least one of my guitars.

Oh yeah, The Astronauts played NO surf at any of their Atlanta shows.

I saw The Dillengers live and guitarist Rick Rossano had about 5 different guitars on stage. He alternated between guitars depending on the song and the sound he wanted.

I own a bunch of guitars but play a Strat in the band for the "one guitar fits all" thang. But I'd love to reach a point where I use multiple guitars onstage. (Maybe when we get roadies... )

CUTBACK

The Mosrite is and will always be my favorite. I have been collecting them for a very long time, but recently discovered that there may be some frauds out there in circulation. Long story short- I saw the Bomboras last new years eve and Lord Hunts back up guitar was a red Mosrite. Upon closer inspection, I saw that there was a Ghastly ones logo on the headstock in the vein of the "Ventures Model". After the show I asked Lord Hunt where he aquired the guitar but he was unwilling to offer up that info. This sparked my interest to say the least, and after some serious research I came to discover that the guitar player of the ghastly ones has been making high quality knockoffs for years, right down to the "Ventures model" logo on the headstock. This upsets me a little because now I have to go through them and find out if my collection is compromised.

The problem with that is that there is too much dead time when switching guitars. I'm sure everyone's been in an audience or on stage when it takes too much time between songs. It's happened to us and it pisses me off.
