Much cooler sounding than a Rhoades

Here's mine. 1961 Wurli Model 120. Heard in a lot of early 60's groups such as The New Dimensions, Original Surfaris, Chantays, Sonics, Wailers, Frantics, Bobby Peterson, "Early" Kingsmen, and tons of others. Ray Charles used this model on What'd I Say. It has such a distinct sound. Some sound dirtier and some cleaner.
No one will touch these things to tune them. I found a Hammond organ guy to come over and tune it up years ago. And he says that he is but one of only a few fellas that will take a call on them. You have to add solder or file it off the tines to get the pitch correct. Can't beat the sound!

Dang! Here's the link Wurlitzer 120

This is about the limit of my organ playing...

Another shot of the Wurlitzer.

I totally agree that a 60's Wurlitzer is to be prefered over a 70's Fender Rhodes although I think we did a pretty good job to prevent it to sound like the "Taxi" theme, haha. These days we are using a simple midi keyboard together with sampled sounds of a Wurlitzer 200 as it became too much of a hassle to borrow the Fender Rhodes every time we were going to record. We tried to find samples made off the 120 model but had to settle for the 200 as there weren't any available at the time.

Check out this quick test recording from when we had just got the Wurlitzer 200 samples. Sounds great enough for us.

Sounds pretty spot on.
I wish we could bring our Wurlitzer to gigs, but it's such a pain to move, much lighter than a Rhoades, but still heavy enough to be a hassle.
I've been looking for a Hohner Pianet, they sound very similar and are very light and compact

I think we got a really good sound out of the Fender Rhodes as well, especially after some post-recording tweaks. The sound of the Wurlitzer definitely needs less tweaking and sounds pretty great stock.

Hey guys!

Im listening to Surfaris a lot and i really dig the piano/organ (synth) in "Green Onions" - can you tell me precisely what instrument it is?
