We played a couple of DEVO songs at the 2004 Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic, and people seemed to dig it. I'm not about to start wearing a red plastic flowerpot on my head, though. I gotta draw the line SOMEWHERE |

My band learned a few Black Sabbath tunes instro style for 666 last year. Black Sabbath, Fairies Wear Boots, Sweet Leaf, N.I.B., Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and The Wizard. People loved it there were a hundred fifty people packed into the double down at 3:00 in the morning to hear that set. —4 out of 5 people prefer Thee Swank Bastards to nothing. |

Others mentioned Girls Talk. Yeah, I like that one. The Beatles' I Feel Fine could be made to work. A personal challenge for me (someday) is to surfinate some elements from Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 40; II-Allegro. It moves along at a nice clip, and already has some staccato notes, slides and glissandi. Something like David Lindley's opening of Mercury Blues could be fun to surferize. Blue Bayou and In Dreams needs some reverb. (Any Roy Orbison fans out there?) Kurt Weill's Alabama Song. The Doors did a fairly straight-forward rendition of it. I haven't heard Bowie's version though. Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. Pick up the tempo some, maybe a bit of reggae flavouring too. More Russian classical stuff - parts of In the Steppes of Central Asia Alexander Borodin. —I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing. |

I've only heard the version up on SG101 - I think that's where I located it - but it's pretty nice. Coincidentally, I just got the urge to play it earlier this evening, and also on Saturday. It's infectious, or maybe I'm just sickly. I downloaded it for a friend who heard you folks in California and asked me to find everything you had up on line for him. Maybe the city fathers of Eau Claire would like a theme song? |

For some reason, re-reading the Devo portion of this thread reminded me of Oingo Boingo's Stay on Dead Man's Party. That has a nice refrain - and the contrast between verse and the refrain is even better. The verse is fine, too, but the melody is a bit subtle. As far as the flower pots, I'd suggest asking the audience to wear them. What I remember though is the toothpaste tubes. |

Not surf at all, of course, but I'd say interesting and surf relevant. |

Love the talk here about Dave Edmunds. Great musician, both in his solo work, and with Rockpile. Back on topic, The Pyronauts' "Ironboard" is based on the opening theme from the 60's Alfred Hitchcock TV show. |

How about Mozart's 40 symphony played in Em? The Ventures recorded this on their classical album calling it "Mozart 40" and I remember it getting a lot of airplay in 1971 or so, at least in Denver. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

The X-Files theme works really well... There's a song on pop radio right now I hear at work, Paralyzer by Finger Eleven, which would probably work nicely. Minor key song with a II7 chord in there... Other thoughts: Summer Breeze by Seals/Crofts...<... wondering if anybody here's done this... —Cheese is great. |

i play in a surf/skate band called birdwatchers and we do surf instros of the monster mash and the misfits london dungeon with guitar taking over the vocal melodies. were also working on a sped up rockabilly version of canned heats goin up the country and a rockabilly cover of the ventures walk dont run, just way faster -think run dont walk. -jukebox joe |
