Permalink Shipping a Surfboard from California to Hawaii

New Topic

Well, this is probably as "off topic" as it comes!

I have to ship a 8'2" mini-longboard from Santa Barbara, CA to a friend who recently moved to Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. I can take care of packing it, that's no problem.

I've gotten quotes from a local shipper, from Pasha Hawaii (who shipped her car), and am waiting on Map Cargo. The quotes to date are outrageous, $400 to $550. That's half of what it cost to ship her car from CA to HI!!

Anybody have experience with this or have some ideas. I mean, $200 might be reasonable, but $500 is absurd! How about shipping it as cargo on a commercial airline?

Any help will be much appreciated!

call fedex and ask them about oversized shipments. second choice would be DHL. we ship surfboards from our shop here on the east coast to california but not hawaii. it has gotten really expensive.

or..........find someone who's flying to hawaii and ask them to take it as part of their luggage..........not on delta though

get in the water and paddle, you will get it there eventually

That's a possibility. An acquaintance is going to Oahu in August and could take it that far. But my friend on the Big Island is somewhat short on patience. I should know as I used to be married to her Shock

Not on that little thing! Need at least a 9'4" to float my ass.

Find someone moving over here...often times they rent space in a container and maybe you could share a space....look up Young Brothers (http://www.htbyb.com/yb/shipgoods.php)they ship to the outer Islands.
Go to the airport and pay someone to carry it with their luggage.

or.......sell it and send the cash along for them to buy another board

yea for $500 she could buy a new one... i get boards shipped from Ca to NYC for about $50 each but that's not Hawaii

Facebook pages theSupertones
or @ Timothy C Sullivan

Yeah that sounds ridiculous. I got two 6'2" surf boards shipped from Southern Cali to Connecticut for some where around $100 +/-.

It's gotta be this one. It was custom shaped for her by Robert August personally and has her name on the stringer Sigh

Thinking the best bet is to pay somebody to take it as luggage.

robert august shaped it eh, listen give it to me, ill make sure it gets to hawaii,,,,,, someday, lol

i watched robert shape at the sacred craft expo, hes a class act i can see why its gotta be that board,

maybe find someone who's shipping a van out there or something and pay them $200 to stick it inside

Just to close out this thread.

I posted a note at a friend's surf shop. 2 days later I got a call from a guy who lives on the Big Island but grew up here and comes back to see family every 2 or 3 months. He usually buys at least one longboard to take back to Hawaii, but not this time. To make a short story long, I packed the board up, gave him $150.00 and the board will be on Hawaiian Airlines winging its way to Kailua Kona on July 9. And he's going to drop the board off at my exe's place as well. Could not ask for a better solution. And the best part is that he'd be willing to do this again if she ever decides she wants her 9'6". But I'm keeping mum on that because I like riding it!

Something I did not know is that longboards from big name mainland shapers (Weber, Harbour, Jacobs, Yater, August, etc.) are quite a commodity in the Islands because of the added cost of shipping. So it's good to know I have a pipeline in case my plan to move there next year comes to fruition.

Air freight is the way to go. Here is a link on some more tips on how to ship a surfboard and packing ideas. Good luck!
