The songs reminded us of Pepsi Generation commercials from the late 60s/early 70s. I think only "Music to Watch girls By" was actually used by Pepsi.
Susan & the Surftones and the Supertones do No Matter What Shape, which I remember from a 60s commercial, but which one?
I move that this song only be performed by bands whose name includes "tone." (A pun.)

I think a few Clash tunes would make real nice reverberated instrumentals...
You turn out to be a good judge of character. There's a Clash surf tribute collection, Charley Does Surf. I am amazed that it doesn't include (title approximate) My Baby Drove Up in a Big Black Cadillac (Jesus Christ, baby, where'd you get that Cadillac!), preferably by the Huntington Cads, but maybe it's because the Clash were only covering it themselves.
The Beloved Seachickens' cover is on that tribute album, of course.

So what are some of you guys' non-surf cover songs that you rework and/or reverb-up into surf tunes?
A few modestly tendered suggestions:
Rory Gallagher's Crest of a Wave. (And the title is good.)
Fleetwood Mac's Black Magic Woman and Albatross (suggestion originally mostly Phil Dirt's, to be perfectly honest), and maybe (Various things) for Madge.
And a weird one: The Theme from Woodie Woodpecker (or, actually, the laugh). I see it maybe crossed with Link Wray's Chicken number.

Holy shit!!! The first time I heard Dave Edmunds'
version, it totally knocked me on my ass!!!
Oops. I missed this exchange.
But speaking of incendiary versions of things by Dave Edmunds, how about his cover of Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me? This was from his incendiary phase, before he got into the "I have to play all the instruments and sing all the parts." phase.

So what ... ?
OK, one more and I'll shut up.
Has anyone else noticed that the Bambi Molester's second CD Intensity! is about 50 per cent (Balkan?) folk music cleverly disguised as surf music? Heck, I think if I were more knowledgable I'd even recognize the sources. Some of them sound pretty familiar.
The Breeze and I - ..., Supertones, Eliminators, Bambi Molesters, ...
Short'nin' Bread - Astronauts, ...
Silver Bullet - Crossfires (= Theme from the William Tell Overture.
I'm pretty sure that the Who's The Ox is essentially a psychedelic Wipeout!. The Small Faces had a version of it, too, but I can never remember the name. It was about their only instrumental.
And about 10% of early surf music is different versions of Ray Charles' What'd I Say?. Many of them pretty good, too.

Pollo del Mar and Satan's Pilgrims do this song very well.

My band have a bit of a penchant (if that's a word) for Surfing up vintage electronic tunes, e.g The Model by Kraftwork goes down very nicely. We also sometimes close out our set with Oxygene II by Jean Michelle Jarre..
Hello by the way!

Hmm. Isn't being able to do S.A.M. in the by-laws of the Surf Band Professional Association? If not, it should be. Good add, Ken.

Nah, it should be banned just as "stairway to heaven" is banned at any reputable (or non reputable) guitar shop. Terminally verbotten.

As a guitarist with The Mariners, I've found that non surf songs can make awesome surf intros as long as you find a melody strong enough to allow it to be carried by lead guitar. It doesn't hurt for the melody to have a few minor chords so that it works well in the surf music realm. Our lead guitarist (otherwise known as Woody) has a good ear for selecting that unusual song that works great as a surf instro. White Wedding turned out to be a big hit during live performances but The Mariners version of Objection Tango (coming out in our new CD) will be even better!!!

I just saw a portion of a Tchaikovsky Ballet (Swan Lake?) and was surprised to hear The Lava Pond by the Kilaueas coming from the TV. It sounds too modern/jazzy for Tchaikovsky. They really cooked on it at the Baja Cantina.
