I started this Saturday February 24th, 2007 and finished Sunday I used blonde smooth 64 style tolex, reglued the joints and set them, sanded, and retolexed, both head and cab, the bandmaster speaker cab is from 64' and I bought a 64 showman cab, I didn't want to use repro cabs but the end result is a fine looking 64 style Showman rig
I placed an order for some rare 64 NOS gold sparkle grill cloth so I'll post photos of that when it's re-grilled
I restore amps 1 of my loves
Special thanks to my asst. my wife Marie aka Nadine for helping with the project and for keeping the kids out of my hair while I worked.

Wow...nice work. How hard was it working with the tolex? What was the hardest part of the job?

Thanks Brian! the hardest parts of retolexing cabs are the heads because of the anlges on the front of the head the glue is not forgiving so you have to measure and trace and place it down to the dime the 1st time and then the edges that fold over are a pain sometimes cause they tend to pop back up so you just have to keep applying pressure till they stick, over the years I think thiers no right or worng way to do it is just trail and error and you find the best ways that work and don't, I get all my supplys from http://www.mojotone.com they are awesome
for those out there that plan to retolex do not use 3m spray glues or other type of spray glues they suck instead use liquid based glue to where you can brush onto the wood and back of the tolex it's more workable and most important measuring and patients.
another thing that works for me is I'll measure and cut my first piece for example the head has 4 pieces as well as the speaker cab minus the back panel that's very easy, you want to start with the sides first once you have measured 1 side you'll trace the second from the first 1 piece, and then you measure the top and cut the piece and then you make a second copy for the bottom, and the easy part of retolexing cabs are the tops and bottoms, the tops overlap the sides and it comes out nice.
speaker cabs are very easy because they have no funky angles it's all strait from sides to top.
If anyone decides to try it you'll need 3 yards of tolex enough to cover a head and speaker cab, for example if you order it from mojotone they sells thiers by (1 yard = 36 x 54")... for $15 each yard so you'll need 3 yards enough to cover a head and cab.

Thanks
I ordered mine from this guy on ebay when he has his listing up for silver grill cloth he also adds to his auction that he does sell gold sparkle grill cloth but does not mention a price so you have to email the guy and I did and he gave me about 2 yards enough for both "head baffle & speaker baffle" for about $70 I still haven't recieved mine yet but soon
it's to bad that the gold sparkle grill cloth is not around, I don't know if the guy has a few rolls or what I didn't ask but it's a sure 1 of Fender's rare grill cloths.
here's his link and email the guy through the auction and asked him if he's got more for sale

Very, very nice work, Kyle. Isn't it a great feeling to know that you have so professionally preserved a piece of musical history?
Kudos!

cool, thanks kyle.
fwiw, I tolexed several combo cabs and one head (and speaker cabs but those dont have the funky corners) and have always used bison tix gel.
it's the kind of stuff you put on with a brush on both sides (easy peasy) - let it dry in, and then apply. it's completly unforgiving in you cant move it AT ALL after it sticks, and you also cant take it back off (disaster) BUT, no air bubbles, and immidate stick, no holding down. but you really need to have four hands (or someone helping you...) to do it.
thanks for the tip on mojotone - 15 is good price.

The glue I used is flexable to a point so it gives you a chance to line things up before it's a done deal, with this glue you don't have to wait for it to dry to apply the tolex to the cab, the only isssues I run into when applying tolex is the edges that's where it tends to come back up but on the flat surfaces it's stick awesome.

I don't recall seeing a book on how to retolex, I mean it's an art I guess a trial an error deal learn as you go on what works best and doesn't that's how I learned, I have retolexed over 40+ amps but you know what there should be a book on how to if there isn't?
The Mrs's is better at the marionettes all I do is get my self tangeled
